I managed to find this on the net, I'm assuming this coverage is already active but since I don't have AT&T myself I can't verify this. Although when I was at work the other day an AT&T customer told me he had a 3G signal while in Bristol, VA so I'm guessing 3G is up at least in parts of the Tri-Cities.

I assumed that since AT&T shows it on their site, it should be active. If you go to the coverage viewer, click on "select areas" next to 3G, the list lof markets has PDF links for some areas that have not been integrated onto the coverage viewer. PDF coverage map from AT&T |

I've personally known very few people that used At&t in the area, and just about all of them came from elsewhere for school or work, but I'm going to start looking for AT&T to start finally making some major customer gains in this area for several reasons. 3G improvements (in combination with the 2nd Gen iPhone), and a lot of those more rural, no coverage areas on the map will soon be gone outside of the Tri-Cities when the DoJ requires some divestments from the Alltel/Verizon merger. Those will probably end up going to At&t, unless somebody really unexpected gets it like Appalachian Wireless or nTelos, and will cause many fewer stories and experiences in the area of known places that At&t gets no signal while CDMA providers work great.

I live about half an hour from Bristol and I recommend CDMA instead of GSM. I have had both ATT and Alltel.. I have had much better coverage with Alltel... Maybe ATT will catch up and compete with CDMA.. but for now i recommend alltel or verizon

After reading this thread I decided to have a look at AT&T's VA 3G coverage for kicks... I noticed that AT&T has installed two tiny spots of 3G over what appears to be Nellyford, VA (Wintergreen) , and Hot Springs, VA (the homestead). I had no idea that they had done this. Makes sense perfect sense, I suppose. (see attached pic) Overall, AT&T is way behind on both 2G & 3G coverage in western Virginia. Even Sprint has 3G down there... |
