I just got a BlackBerry 8100 from a friend who didn't want it anymore. I was wondering if I would be able to call AT&T to get the unlock code. The phone was originally with Tmobile. If not, I'll go ahead and have it unlocked. Thanks for all your help.

You'd have to get the unlock code from T-Mobile or do one of the ones you pay for over the internet.

Oh ok, can I get the code from Tmobile? I heard that you have to be under contract to get it from them. Do you know of any good unlocking sites?

not sure...(but certain I will be corrected if I am) have your freind call Tmobile (he is the original owner) usually a wireless carrier wont give out an unlock code unless there is proof of ownership or txfer of ownership .... thats the current ATT policy... I would imagine that Tmobile as a similar policy on unlocks | |

Yeah, they do, I called and asked AT&T they said since it is tmobile i can't, and my friend canceled his contract to go with a local carrier like cricket or something like that. I went a head and unlocked it with gsm phone source, it was pretty cheap and didn't take to long to get the code. I just have one question, do I really have to get a Blackberry data plan to go online. I have the media net tab on it and it opens up the media net home page. Am I fine like this? Thanks for all your help.

Can you browse from the MediaNet page without any issue? It's always been my understanding that Blackberries require a special server for their data access and that you won't get that without having a Blackberry data plan - it is supposedly even required just for the MMS service to work. However, you don't have to have a Blackberry data plan in order to use a Blackberry with at&t. Voice and SMS will work; I'm just not sure how much else really will. But if it does "work" you will be using data on a "pay per use" basis - which is 1 cent per kB for chargeable data usage. Under at&t's T&C's you cannot add a price discounted MediaNet "plan" to a Blackberry.

Yeah, I'm using the tmobile theme because its a lot better than AT&T's for the Blackberry and that gives me a icon that when I higlight it it says medianet and it gives me AT&T's homepage for media net. I haven't seen any charges for internet usage other than the media net. Surprisingly I've been able to send and recieve MMS messages. I won't worry to much about the data because i'm thinking of getting a new iphone and let my dad use it for his work. Thanks a lot for all your help.

You're welcome. Thanks for the info. That's interesting that you seem to be able to use data (outside of just Blackberry e-mail) w/o a Blackberry plan since I'd had the understanding that it required a different server than what is used for MediaNet.

FYI cancelled customers can get phones unlocked within 60 days of the cancellation date of their acct for free. Customers whose contracts have both expired and customers who are under contract can get one free unlock code every 90 days I know this is too little to late, but this is tmobile's sim unlock policy

My friend had it canceled for a while, so it was just safe to get one from one of those unlocking sites. it was surprisingly easy. Thanks anyways.
