So why are there are so many places here that AT&T roams off of Alltels GSM. I think they are crazy loosing that revenue. Anyways how much do you think Alltel makes off of GSM traffic?

What is AT&T trying to hide from?Nothing. No matter the carrier the story is still the same, there will not be coverage where you expect they all have dead spots.
My nephew goes to Assumption College and he had to jump ship from Verizon because that area is a dead spot for them.
My AT&T service the last 2 years has worked very well for me, the Boston/Worcester area in my opinion has excellant AT&T coverage considering where GSM was 8+ years ago.

Remember when you were 4 years old, and the big, green, hairy monster tried to hide behind the box of Hot Wheels in your bedroom closet? It didn't work for the monster, and it won't work for AT&T. They're too big to hide.

Alltel makes plenty on GSM roaming, that's why they kept the GSM newtork up and running.
Not sure the actual number, but it is alot.

An insider and friend on WA told me about this thread and in my experience, AT&T is excellent both in my area and in my sister's area (she has been testing it for over a week now via my Razr V3 with prepaid AT&T SIM). We will definitely be switching to them most likely in July (and then port over from VZW after August 1). AT&T's (Cingular at the time) network was garbage back when they were transitioning from TDMA to GSM. It was so bad, that we had to switch to Sprint (then they got bad ) and then Verizon (now they are bad ). So it looks like we have come full circle and will be back with our original company (Cell One was our first provider but they were bought out by Cingular and then AT&T, so technically it is our "original" provider ).

Even though I don't have AT&T, they never hide from me.
A 300 foot tower of theirs is right behind my backyard.

Here's what I have to look at everyday
(Click image for more on this tower):

The important thing is AT&T made improvements. They've done this here in L.A., and it's very noticeable. More often than not I really do experience "more bars in more places"...

Mike this is the same with my work phone but my slogan has come to be "more all circuits are busy in more places." I really hate to say this but maybe they cant hide but I sure as hell can hide my pocket book from them.

I hope this did not offend anyone as I am not trying to. Thanks

Definitely. I am very impressed with AT&T and their network both in my area and my sister's area from what she has told me. So far, I have only run into a few areas deep inland in my county where the towers are only every 4-5 miles where my Razr wasn't receiving a full signal (but still had clear calls).

In the end, isn't that all that matters? I don't care if I only have 1 bar of signal, as long as the call is clear.

I definitely agree. But due to the distance between the towers in the rural part of my county, I am still nonetheless impressed with AT&T and their network. My sister is testing the Razr now in Lincoln and she was able to get a good signal in the basement of the department store at the mall there where her Verizon phone dropped me (even with the antenna up).

Glad it is working out for you. I have had at&t since 1989 through Analog, TDMA & GSM and all the mergers acquisitions and name changes. Their coverage has been excellent for me and in all the places I go to. I had Verizon simultaneously with at&t for almost 5 years and it was very disapointing, dropped many calls, could never do a PRL update and worked only from one corner of the house and that too, barely.

Lol, my situation is pretty similar to yours. The tower is not exactly behind my backyard but I do have a clear view of it.

And you are not, since you are not paying for them. I am rather surprised though that your company is with a provider that does not work in your area. Our company's provider is at&t and they are evaluated every year by taking a detailed employee survey and the decision is based entirely on that.

PS: We are in a pretty rural area, surrounded by horse stables and cabbage fields.

att has vastly improved where i live from the TDMA days of Cingular. we still are considered rural, and 1900mhz mostly but i still have very few issues, not to mention i have 3G. all in all its great for me personally. i wouldnt go with anything else.

Yes, I am also glad that it is working out for me. That is definitely a good idea about the detailed survey. My uncle lives in wester Michigan in the LP and the company he works for has Verizon. They got rid of it as of yesterday and on Monday he will be picking up his brand new Alltel phone. I don't know what it will be, but with Verizon he had a BB.
