Question Unlocked Massachusetts Cell Phone Recommendations

I received a new cell phone from work and I dislike it so much I would like to puke. It is a Nokia 2610. Unfortunately where my work is willing to pay for all my calls, they are not willing to get me a decent phone. More specifically, my old phone had a text message reminder feature (if I received a text message, I would get a reminder every 1 to 2 minutes on the phone via an audible alert until it was read). This new one does not have that and it is really, really needed.

What I would like to do, is purchase a phone on ebay and swap my sim card from my AT&T wireless phone to the better phone. I have heard it is "possible" with unlocked phones, however, I am leary of spending the money only to have a problem getting it to work.

I apologize if this is the wrong place to ask this question, but, I cannot find any specific information on swapping sim cards here in Massachusetts.

Thanks in advance. If I can get some good information on what phones will work, maybe I can pick someone elses brain on whether they have the feature I need or not.

As long as the phone is either unlocked or was on AT&T you can use any GSM phone. Just take the SIM out and put it in the new phone.

Additionally, be sure it has both the 850 and 1900 mhz frequencies that at&t uses - otherwise you are likely to have coverage issues. Look carefully at the eBay listing as many phones are European models that lack the 850 band.

My Motorola L2 has the "alert" feature you mention. Neither of my Nokias have had it, and it is helpful.

Cool Re: Unlocked Massachusetts Cell Phone Recommendations

I agree. I own a Nokia 2610 too. I have always been with Motorola phones personally since 1995. Trying other phones on and off in between. The 2610 is the first low end Nokia I've tried since '02. And I was quite disappointed. Build quality is not that great. And your right about that message reminder. Sucks. I tried a Moto SLVR L6 flashed to Cingular, and it worked great, for a good price. If you want to stick with a bar form factor, of course. The L6, and hme83's recommendation of the L2, and for the whole L Series as, L7, L9 for bar phones. The reason why I like the L Series, is for the price, the features, durability, and build quality, it's the best value. IMO.

Wish I still had that L6.......it became a victim of the elements @ 10,000ft.
