New Samsung A827 available

I stopped by my local store today and they showed me the new Sammy bar phones that just came in. It looks really cool, but then I found out it was just a regular bar phone, not a smartphone. As much as it costs ($299 - Same as the TIlt), and its just a bar phone with no touchscreen. It was the same size as my Tilt, but about half as thick.

I don't think they will be selling much of them. If you are spending that much for a phone, and getting something that big it better at least have smartphone features, if not full blown PDA capability.

I have a feeling the "TV" availability in the phone is the reason for the ridiculous price. Considering it is a Samsung (), it doesn't have much going for it as you mentioned. I'm not sure Mobile TV is all that successful anyway.

Oh, well, I'm sure someone will buy it and like it, but it won't be us...

you will need to be in a mediaFLO ("mobile tv") area to buy a version of this that is TV capable. the same goes for the Vu. i just read about this today. i was freaked.

Personally I think this new Samsung is too big and clunky for just being a regular phone. Its the same dimensions as my Tilt, except its about half as thick. It has no smartphone or PDA capability. If you are looking for an iPhone competitor look to the HTC Tilt or the LG Vu.

And keep in mind, the LG Vu is a poor competitor to the iPhone. There are some limitations with LG's GSM menu.

Talked with an rep at an AT&T store and even he was hugely disappointed in the Vu. The only benefits are 3G and Mobile TV ability (things which should appear in the next iPhone).

By the way, Steven, I read on Howard forums that AT&T might be doing an iPhone refurb deal again. Whether this will really happen or not is anyone's guess, but you might want to keep an eye on their site.

I have to disagree with you slightly. Having owned an HTC smartphone and now owning an iPhone, I have to say that they are in two different categories. The Tilt does so much as a bona fide smartphone. It is meant for business and it does so fantastically.

Even though the iPhone has many "smartphone" features, it really is an entirely different animal. It does things so differently than any other phone that I was a little surprised by it. I would call it a "feature" phone more so than a smartphone. It does what it does and it does it VERY WELL.

Maybe the next iPhone will be more of a competitor to HTC, but IMO, they are in two totally different ballparks.

I realize it is your opinion that the Tilt is a better device, but for me the comparison between it and the iPhone is apples and oranges.

I don't know if you've had a chance to really play with an iPhone, but the UI is phenominal. This alone puts it in a league by itself. I'm not an Apple fanboy, but Windows Mobile cannot compare to the version of OS-X on the iPhone. I believe the UI alone is responsible for the hysteria around the phone moreso than the design or iPod capability. Now that I own one, I can see why.

I understand what you are talking about the UI completely. One of the nice things about Windows Mobile is you can completely customize the UI. I have some elements of the Apple UI installed on my TIlt, like Slide to unlock. I have also customized the pnone with a rotating 3D cube with each tab being a side on the cube. If desired you can even go as far as downloading all the iPhone icons and make a Tilt almost a carbon copy of the iPhone's UI.

I understand part of the iPhone's appeal - its a very slick looking device. However, when I look at features vs price, the Tilt has far more features and flexibility. I'd rather have a Tilt with an iPhone UI installed, than an actual iPhone - That's just my personal opinion though.

Absolutely for the price and functionality, the Tilt is better than anything out there. I believe it is HTC's flagship phone.

I realize our opinions are based on our individual preferences and experiences. I just wanted to point out something about the iPhone that caught ME by surprise! The fact that I waited 11 months to finally get the darn thing (even on the eve of the new version coming out) had to do with me not yet being convinced of its vurtues, but part of why I wanted one had to do more with how much I love how the Voyager works. This caught me off guard too. I was really looking forward to the Vu and was very disappointed with the end result. Even with Verizon's ham-handed UI, the Voyager blows the Vu away (with or without a QWERTY keyboard). So when it came down to nixing the Vu as a purchase option, I thought why not go for the one that started the "touch" frenzy, so I did. As expensive as it is, I don't regret it.

By the way, I have the new SPB software on the MDA. It has several iPhone-like effects that I like. So I know what you're talking about regarding WM customization.

I enjoy these kinds of exchanges of opinions because of how we can express what others are thinking as well. Fellow members and lurkers learn things and that's what WA is here for. This is why I like being here more than any other site. It's fun and all good!

I don't think I'll ever buy a Samsung phone again. The call quality is iffy on my SYNC.. and it's not comfortable up against my ear (the border is too jagged).

So I was going to post in this thread when i first read it, but I had just gotten my phone so I thought I'd wait.
Samsung access review:
I love the look of the phone, it is a bit wider and taller than most but i think it's comfortable, my thumb can stretch across to the far keys just fine with difficulty. But i don't really pay attention to the good things, so here's my list of things I dislike

• Calls
• Ringtones - It takes at least 2-3 rings before my phone will start playing the ringtone I have set. I know this because it will vibrate, I can pull it out of my pocket, read who is calling, and answer, all before the song comes in. It's quite annoying, basically defeats the purpose of having a ringtone, if this is a setting, hopefully someone will point out my stupidity so I can fix it.
• Ringtones Part 2 - There's a "Increasing Melody" setting for the ringer on this phone, it sounds retarded. You can actually hear the steps it's taking to increase the ring, it's not a smooth gradual fade, it's steps. I don't have any need for an increasing melody so i have just plain "melody" set on mine, but it actually still has a sound change that you can hear, it starts out at what I would say is a "4" and jumps to a "7" after a second (this is on a scale from 1-7, considering that's what the phone uses for it's volume).
• Picture ID - The screen on this thing is nice, and beautiful. But the picture that shows up when a person calls is incredibly small, it's ridiculous, another feature that's basically pointless because it's not done right. I was actually looking forward to this phone because of the screen and using this feature. very dissapointing.
• Layout - The home screen, or main screen whatever you'd call it (not the menu), is just kind of things layed out sitting there. It doesn't look to bad with the default setting, but there are 2 clock options, and the 2nd one is just retarded. It actually looks like an error for just how slopped on there it is. It'd be nice if there was some sort of menu bar across the bottom too
• Buttons - I like the look of the actual physical buttons, and the feel as well. This is about the programming of the buttons. The center button in my opinion should be "menu" or at least customizable. But this phone has it set to medianet, and there's not a way to change it from what I can see.
• Buttons Part 2 - The shortcuts are dumb (Left, Right, Up, Down, on the center button). There are just too few options for what you can make those. For messaging the only options are inbox and create message. I'm anal about whether my messages are delivered and when they were and if they were sent to the right person, so I kind of NEED a shortcut that just takes me to the main messaging menu...which brings me to...
• Noises and Notifications - There are a few things that annoy me here.
• Message Sent - When sending a text message once the message is sent succesfully a little noise is made telling me so, the problem is this noise happens about 2 seconds after i click send, so it's kind of a nuisance. I would like it if I could change the noise, make it something less generic, or even just a vibration would be great.
• Message Recieved while browsing - This one really bugs me, if you're in any menu, any program, anywhere on the phone but the main screen and you get a text message all that happens is your text message sound is played and an icon pops up in the top menu, but there's no way to access the message from that menu, no window pops up asking if you want to open it.
• Sound quality - It's really just crap when talking to someone, not more to say there, it's loud but it sounds blown out.

I guess I'll list some things I like, they're not anything special, in my opinion they're basic things all higher class phones should have

• Call/Text Reminder - (notification after a missed call or text i.e. every minute)
• Custom Text Tones - (each contact can have his/her own sound for text message)

That's basically it, I like the large screen, I like the size, I like the style, I like the camera, the picture quality is good (i'll post up if anyone's interested) but in my opinion it's not worth 450$. I got hooked up on mine through siblings and upgrades so I didn't spend that much, probably only 1/4th that and I'm still iffy if it was worth it. I'm considering getting a different phone now, if anyone has suggestions let me know

Sounds like you have it on what Motorola calls "Vibe then ring" where the phone vibrates for the first 5 secconds, then the ringtone kicks in. If there is a setting for "Vibe & Ring" try that.
