| Not until sometime in May (or possibly June). When AT&T's ready to launch their Mobile TV, you'll see the Vu released.

Apple is expected to launch a high-speed wireless version of iPhone in the second quarter and produce as many as 8 million of the devices in the third quarter, according to Bank of America. "Our latest channel checks point to a significant production build of a 3G iPhone beginning in the month of June after an initial small build in May," said Bank of America analyst Scott Craig. AT&T said last year it expects to be able to sell a 3G version of iPhone in 2008, but it declined comment on specific launch dates on Friday. Taiwan-based Hon Hai, which operates stateside under the trade name Foxconn Electronics, has secured an exclusive contract to assemble a more advanced version of Apple's popular iPhone. Hon Hai would be producing next-generation iPhones for Apple and is the exclusive contract manufacturer for the new phones. Apple doesn't actually make most of its products. It hires manufacturing specialists - mainly companies from Taiwan that have extensive operations in China - to assemble its gadgets based on Apple's designs. They use parts from other outside suppliers, many of which also are from Taiwan and elsewhere in Asia. The arrangement frees Apple and its fellow vendors from running complicated, labor-intensive production lines, while the ability of Taiwanese companies to slash manufacturing costs helps cut product prices over time. Apple is using a similar setup for the iPhone, the multimedia cell phone the company unveiled in June last year with great fanfare. Some analysts speculate that the new iPhones could be in the market as early as May. Apple has said previously it aims to sell 10 million iPhones by 2008. | |

| It won't matter AT&T has a very small 3G network only in a few select large cities it is useless every where else. Sprint has 3G EVDO in so many more places even rural areas AT&T can't even come close. |

| It looks like the Vu should be out on May 5th. From what I've been reading, many stores already have the phone in stock. |

| In starting to shop for cell service again, leaving T-Mobile due to issues, I have looked at AT&T and VZW. I found that of course VZW has the Voyager (which is a VZW model phone only). However, AT&T has the Vu which is the Voyager (in essence) without the flip open QWERTY Keyboard. Now, both AT&T and VZW, on both the Voyager and Vu, will use the MediaFlo service for the TV feature. Now MediaFlo does NOT use a 3G network it uses the UHF TV band area (something like channel 55 or 56) for broadcast. This is why the Voyager and Vu had a seperate pull out antenna to Rx the TV signal. Now for VZW and AT&T it is billed like a data service but if you notice there is NO data limits (aka 5mb, 10mb, 5gb, etc..) just packages are adjusted per amount of channels you would like to watch. So to steer this thread back on the subject at hand I have played with a working Vu demo at an AT&T corp store in MN. (I had to show that I really wanted that instead of the iPhone). MediaFlo was NOT up and running but the Vu is a little smaller (to me at least) then the Voyager. I figure rightfully so as there is no internal QWERTY keyboard on the Vu. The touch screen does have the vibrate response to touch and seems to have a good not to sensative not to dull response when touching the screen. However, for the sausage (aka large fingered person) it is easy to accidently bump soemthing else while trying to touch something else. All in all the limited hands on time did not really allow me to give a good comparasion for features compared to the iPhone. But I do think that it will give it a good run for the money. |
