Default Porting and iPhone Question

Does anybody know if you are able to port a number from say, Verizon, to AT&T even though the number is in a different market than I live? Because my friend's dad signed the Verizon contract for me because Verizon isn't in my area and I ended up getting a Midland, MI number and if I port to AT&T for the iPhone, I was wondering if I would still be able to keep my number or not even though in live outside that particular market.

yea, you can do this with the iphone no prob.

what it will ask you if your billing address is different from the market in which your mobile number is, it may ask you to give them an "address of usage". but you shouldnt have a problem.

hopefully i am understanding what your asking.

Yeah, that's basically what I was asking. Because the billing address and phone number for the Verizon account is in a totally different area than where I live. So, I was just hoping that when I go to activate the phone, it won't tell me that I can't because that number isn't in my market. My friend would be in a similar situation who is getting an iPhone as well on my account. His number is from that same market but he actually lives over there. How does that work out when it comes to the "address of usage"?

Well, that's kinda the thing. His primary place of usage will be different from mine. I guess I could just lie and say it's the same as mine, but it still doesn't change the fact that he lives in a different market than me. I thought I had heard somewhere that AT&T and/or Verizon were allowing accounts to have lines that were in different markets. Maybe not.

AT&T does not like having numbers from different markets on the same family plan. When my uncle wanted to get a phone we tried to have a Florida number added to my account on a family plan. I even went into a corporate store to try and do this. They could add him to my family plan, but the corporate store in Fl wanted to give him a northern Virginia number, because that's where my account is based.

Well, the thing is, we both live in Michigan and we both live in the same area code. But, I'm not quite sure if we're in the same market. Both of our numbers that we have now from Verizon are currently in the same market, but when we port to AT&T, I'm not quite sure if they're going to allow me to take over those numbers since they are in a different market than where I live (I believe).

I guess, hypothetically, I could just have my friend, who is going to have the other iPhone, just sign the contract and everything because he's the one who lives in that same market, for sure. So, maybe that would make the whole process go faster and actually work.

what is your area code and exchange (first 3 digits of your phone number) for both numbers I can tell you the markets for them and whether or not they can be in the same family plan

If you are the same area code then chances are you are in the same market.

Well my number is (989) 600 and my friend's number is (989) 430. They are both Midland, MI numbers for Verizon. It's just that I don't live anywhere's near Midland, I live in the Thumb of Michigan, which I believe is a totally different market. The only reason I have a Midland number is because my friend's dad signed the contract because Verizon isn't in the Thumb.

Both numbers are in the same market... That's not a problem. Its only a problem if you are trying to combine numbers from different markets. AT&T didn't let me put a Florida number on my DC area account 2 years ago. They did say that I could let my uncle have a DC number and live in Florida though. That was the only way they would let us be on a family plan togeather.

Well, yeah, I guess Midland is part of the Saginaw metro area.

My ZIP code is 48723. It used to be a Dobson area until AT&T bought it out just recently.

your zip shows a CARO MI area... are your cel numbers a LD call from your home phone?

if not you are good with you current numbers

Most definitely yes. Midland is probably a good hour and a half away from me. Only calls made in Caro or our county are local.
