Can't picture message without PPU data??

my next door neighbor has two daughters......He and them are all on one plan with unlimited family messaging.......the one does a lot of picture messaging.....but recently he turned off the MEdia Net and their Picture Messaging stopped working......how do you work around this or fix it???

Now I know why I cannot send MMS anymore. I took PPU data off my phone.

If I add PPU data back on, and I send a MMS, will I be charged data also? I have a 2 MP camera on my phone, so the images are a bit large. I can live without MMS, but it would be nice to be able to use it once in a while.

You need a data plan. The message is charged as a message + associated data to download the media. If you are on PPU then its $0.01/kb. Most who use picture messaging are on unlimited data plans so they don't notice the second data charge.

That pisses me off!!! Charge me for the message, or the data, but not both. I am not billed twice for a gallon of milk; four bucks for the milk, and then fifty cents for the jug. (granted I know that I pay for both when I purchase it, but it is not a charge billed separately and blind sighted after I consume the product.) I really hate the cell phone industry.

EDIT: I did not know how they charged me for it to begin with when I asked the question.. I just thought about needing data, and then how all the companies try to milk out all they can, many times in very fine print to hide it, and then gave it the worst case scenario. Not a bad guess.

no......no company charges for data on MMS........i know that for sure.......cuz when my neighbor did have PPU data she didnt get charged for the MMS data...........

Jay, I'm positive that's no longer the case — nowadays AT&T doesn't charge extra for data when using MMS. You can have no data plan, no messaging plan and be able to send MMS and just pay the $.25 message charge.

Years ago when I was on PPU data I was charged $0.25 + $0.01/kb. You are right, this may have been due to the old plan I was on at the time though.

Multimedia messages are sent via the data network. The message center is at http://mmsc.cingular.com. If you do not have data connectivity your phone cannot reach the message center to send or receive messages. No data charges are accessed for sending or receiving multimedia messages. Messages larger than 300 kilobytes are charged $0.50 extra. This does not come from your message allowance but is added to your bill. AT&T limits outgoing messages to 300 kilobytes but you might receive larger messages sent from an email address.

well cant it be set so that access to the mmsc domain will work but access to anything else won't.................i mean all MEdia Net data goes through proxies and that can all be blocked and filtered i'm sure........it would just be a matter of provisioning the account's data so that it would only be able to access http://mmsc.cingular.com.

You can get the "No Browse" option added to your line. It prevents the browse from connecting to the Internet but not other applications such as messaging and email. Be careful with email because an email client which downloads attachments can go through a lot of data.

Some plans yes, some don't. Depends on the plan. Which plan in particular are you looking at? If its the new $30 PDA/Smartphone connect unlimited I think it does include email.

unlimited email comes with the unlimited internet packages which depending on your advice is somethin like $15 or $30

now if you have a new message plan your plan includes both... ie 5.00 messaging plan covers 200 text OR pic/vid... the data is still needed to transport the message but no data charge
