Default Upgrading to 3G with existing plan...

So I just finally bit the bullet and bought a Nokia 6555 online. Also ordered a 3G AT&T 64K Sim. Question is, with a regular Nation GSM rate plan (with gait on it). Will I have to ditch the GAIT feature on my account and also add some other feature to use WCDMA?

Thanks!

The GAIT is no longer relevent. TDMA is shut off in many places, and will not live to see 2009. If you are happy with your plan, keep it and just add the right data package. You can probably do it online.

Ok. My question was more along the lines of, do I need a 3G sim, or anything else such as a feature to have my phone access UMTS/WCDMA, or will it just pick it up? I was told I may need to get rid of the gait feature in order to add a WCDMA feature... It didnt seem like this rep was too bright...

Gonz, I don't know if you need to ditch the GAIT feature, the WCDMA is not an add-on feature. As long as you have a 3G phone with a 3G SIM, it will automatically access 3G when available.

Hope this helps

The only thing I can think of is if you upgrade your plan would you loose the GAIT feature, with Feb 08 fastly approaching and the shut off TDMA/Analog they may force you to switch to a regular GSM plan Gonz.

As Charlyee said you will need a 3G SIM to automatically access 3G where it's available, so you may want to upgrade to a GSM plan.

I believe the issue between GAIT and 3G involved the SIM. The SIMs marked "3G" could not be used with GAIT, one had to use an older 64k or certain regional 32k SIM. I think someone had posted that they could still get 3G with a non-3G SIM, but I am not positive.

That said, there looks like no reason to try to keep GAIT. AT&T recently removed the feature from my account, and when you think about it, AT&T will most likely be discontinuing ALL support for TDMA/AMPS after February, including switching equipment. That means they would no longer keep ESNs in their system, and therefore you could not roam on anyone else's TDMA/AMPS, either.
