Press Release Source: AT&T Inc. AT&T Expanding Wireless Coverage in Massachusetts; Investing More Than $71 Million in the State's Wireless Network This Year Friday September 21, 9:32 am ET WESTWOOD, Mass., Sept. 21 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AT&T (NYSE: T - News) has announced a planned investment of more than $71 million in the Massachusetts wireless network in 2007. This will bring the company's three-year investment in the state's wireless network to more than $420 million. This year's planned investment includes the addition of 12 new GSM cell sites and 171 next-generation high speed 3G network cell sites throughout the state. "Our goal is to ensure that AT&T customers have the very best wireless experience possible -- which includes excellent coverage and quality of service," said Steve Krom, AT&T's vice president and general manager for wireless operations in New England. "In fact, in Boston, no network is more reliable than AT&T's wireless network. Our ongoing investment in the Massachusetts network gives customers the benefits of a state-of-the-art voice and data network along with cutting-edge wireless devices." AT&T has recently turned on a new GSM cell site in Newton that provides enhanced wireless service to Route 9 and the surrounding area. This year, AT&T has also expanded its blazing-fast 3G network in the Boston area, along the north shore and in the New Bedford area, with the addition of 65 new 3G cell sites. Eleven additional GSM cell sites planned for the Bay State this year will enhance wireless coverage for AT&T customers in a number of areas, including Wayland -- along Route 20 -- and Wellesley -- at the intersection of Route 9 and Route 16. A new site in South Natick will also expand coverage along Route 16. North of the city, an additional cell site in Medford will enhance coverage on routes 60 and 38 and surrounding areas. A new North Andover site will increase AT&T's wireless signal along routes 114 and 125 near the Lawrence border. Additionally, a planned site addition in Andover will further enhance coverage along routes 28 and 125. In the western suburbs, residents and visitors to the community of Carlisle will benefit from a new site that will enhance the wireless experience in the town, specifically along Route 225. And, in western Massachusetts, a new cell site in Hampden, also bordering East Longmeadow, will increase coverage along Porter Road and Allen Street. On the south shore, a new site will expand coverage in the southern part of Hull. In Milton, a new AT&T cell site will enhance coverage along Route 28 and the busy commuter routes surrounding the Blue Hills area. And, toward Cape Cod, a new Chatham site will expand wireless coverage along routes 137 and 28. Later this year, AT&T plans on introducing its 3G network to the Springfield and Worcester areas and will further expand 3G service for its customers in New Bedford with the addition of 106 new 3G cell sites. AT&T's 3G network provides customers with access to broadband-type speeds for their laptops. AT&T customers will be able to use their 3G handsets to quickly access feature-rich wireless content, including videos, pictures and the latest music, entertainment, news and weather programming, through MEdia Net, the company's mobile Internet portal. AT&T's 3G network also supports new services, such as Video Share, which lets customers share live, real-time video while having a conversation on their wireless phones. During the past three years, AT&T has delivered dramatic change in Massachusetts -- a direct result of the company's continuing efforts to expand and enhance its network operations and the synergies that come from being part of the world's largest communications company. In 2006, the company added new cell sites in Scituate, Marshfield, Pembroke and along Route 3 in the Norwell area, as well as in Stoneham, Gloucester and Rockport on the north shore. Cell sites were also added southwest of Boston in the towns of Sherborn, Natick, Wrentham, Norfolk, Franklin and North Attleboro. AT&T also enhanced service for Boston-area commuters and tourists with additional cell coverage along Route 93 and the Mass Pike, as well as on routes 9 and 30 in Framingham. The company's 2006 network investment also brought a significant enhancement to wireless coverage on the Cape, particularly along routes 6 and 6A and in the communities of Barnstable, Dennis and Brewster, as well as on Martha's Vineyard in West Tisbury. Last year in western Massachusetts, AT&T added service to the towns of Greenfield, Pittsfield, Hadley, Lee, Lenox and Richmond and along Route 91 and within the communities between Amherst and Springfield, as well as east of Springfield and on the Mass Pike near Warren. The company has also turned on a new cell site in Dalton that brings better service along routes 8, 8A and 9, as well as the areas between Hinsdale, Lanesborough and Pittsfield. Ten additional new sites were added in Otis, Hampden, Wales, Holland, Sunderland, Ludlow, Springfield and East Longmeadow. AT&T diligently monitors the quality and coverage of its network. In addition to third-party vendors that assess the company's network performance, AT&T wireless network engineers constantly monitor the network and drive tens of thousands of miles throughout Massachusetts each year to ensure that the network is operating at peak efficiency.
