Question Palm Treo 750 on at&t PYP?

Will the Palm Treo 750 work on at&t's PYP prepaid if I have the $19.99 unlimited media net plan? I know that real web browsing wouldn't work, but Wap should. If I can use it, what other features would work?
I'm still undecided on this one. I've seen Charlyee's review on here and it seems ok, however the reviews that I've read on CNet haven't been good at all. Palm Treo 750 - black (AT&T) Reviews. Smart phones Reviews by CNET.

Thanks in advance.

You might want to call and confirm. In theory, it should work, but when I got mine the rep was pretty adamant (no, not Adam Ant) that I needed the pda personal. With all the rumored audits going on, I would hate to rack up a ton of data usage on a medianet plan, only to have them suddenly charge for its use due to having an improper plan.

I have a Treo 750v and used it for several months on the AT&T network with just a basic plan.
I didn't registered my phone with AT&T for three months and they didn't know the difference.
Yes you can use it on a Prepaid or Pay as you go plan.

Thanks for your reply. The AT&T store rep. confirmed for me the other day that although I could use a smartphone with PYP, he didn't recommend that I buy the Treo 750.

You would have to pay full retail, I used my 8125 on a pyp for a while before.

Thanks for the reply nKrypte. I don't mind paying full retail for the handset, as long as I'm not obligated to stay with a carrier for any length of time.

Update: So far my new Tilt has been working perfectly on PYP. I haven't noticed any data charges so far, even while using IE. I plan on testing the WiFi, when I figure out how to use it on this PDA device.

Jay, can you make WiFi the default connection on the Tilt, so it will only look for at&t's network if there is no available WiFi?

I could do it on my QTEK 9100 but that was unlocked & unbranded, so I was wondering how at& handles the branded phones.

Thanks Much

I don't know. I've never tried. The 3G is faster than the wireless network @ home, and I am on an unlimited data package. I can certainly try, but my guess it would seriously impact the battery life leaving WiFi on all the time. I know when I teather a computer to the Tilt over WiFi I need to have the phone plugged into a charger because the battery gets sucked down fast.

I just checked. Under Settings/Connections/Connections/Advanced/Select Networks you can specify which data connection to use by default.

Yes, I definitely agree that it is an awesome phone. It might be a little more than what I need, but I'll keep it a little longer. I wish AT&T would come out with a phone like Verizon's LG enV, it was the perfect size for me. And I prefer that keypad over the Tilt's.

Jay, did you notice any improvement in the battery life after the first 3 charges? I charged it fully over night, and now the battery is down to 55%. Thanks.

My battery under "normal" use is usually down to about 60% to 70% by the end of the day. If I stream internet radio over my stereo BT headset then I'm usually down to about 10% by the end of the day. I always plug it in while running TomTom in the car as GPS applications can kill a fully charged battery in under an hour.

Good to know, thanks for checking into this Jay. The WiFi at home is slower than the 3G for my Treo also. I only use the WiFi from overseas, since if available, it is free or very inexpensive comparatively.

why go PYP?

If you have your own device or Pay "Full Retail" you can be on an "current rate plan" with no obligated contract. the only thing is you will have to pay $25 for the sim card and that is it.

this is something that not many people know about right now but it is in fact something that AT&T is doing as part of compliance and IMO, seems to be a stab towards an even more open service.

As far as I know AT&T does not currently offer a plan as cheap as the one that I had with PYP. I paid $54.00/month including tax, for 200 ATM (just the right amount for my usage), and Unlimited data. Can any of AT&T's current Month-to-Month offerings beat this plan?

eh depends on where you work if you get an employee discount. if you cheat the system with the medianet unlim on a reg plan your lookin at about 55+tax...so in that case yea that will be cheaper the way you are doing it. and the good thing about the PYP is they give you the larger footprint like the normal plans and so they dont restrict you to just native calling like the Pay As You Go

Yes you are right PYP has a larger footprint than PAYG but it is still not the coverage that the regular plans have. My understanding is the PYP has some roaming arrangements (as opposed to none in the PAYG) but not all the ones that a regular plan does.

I can get a 7% discount through my place of employment. When I talked to the Reps. that came to my work site, they told me that I would have to pick a plan that was $39.99, and then add a data plan on to that. Also in order for me to take advantage of that discount, I would have to sign a 2 year agreement, which I will never do. I positively "hate" being locked into anything for any length of time. That is why prepaid service is the best fit for me.

Charlyee, dmapr put up maps of these two services together in a thread once. (I don't know how he did it) Do you know how to do that, in order to show the comparison of the two? Thanks.

Ellen, yes I rember those. Here are the three plans around the midwest area. I am sure Dmapr's was a lot more refined but this gives a comparitive idea, I hope.

1. Regular.
2. PYP
3. PAYG

Eric, it may depend on how good the at&t native coverage is in an area and how providers they have to have roaming arrangement with. As you can see IA has the biggest difference.

This where I got it from, at&t Coverage Viewer.

Thanks for posting this Charlyee. All three of these look like they are just about equal in Wisconsin. What is in the areas that show white at the top? It doesn't look like there is much coverage there.

Yes, Wisconsin is good in the South & East, actually exceptionally good. There is hardly any coverage in the Northwoods and also West Central part.

Also even though they look pretty close, my regular phone would have reception north of the Madison area but my PYP didn't. In that area I mostly roam on IWireless.

Basically both GoPhone plans are worthless in IA, but I get very good reception all the way through IA and NE on my regular phone.
