Default Port number to prepaid

Has anyone ported their number from a postpay account on one service to a prepaid account on a different service? I have Verizon postpay and want to switch to Cingular GoPhone, but was told in a store and on the phone that I can't keep my existing cell number. However, if I go to the cingular website and go through the process of selecting a plan and phone, during checkout the first thing it asks is if I want to transfer an existing number. Unfortunately, it says that it will request the existing account information only after the checkout process is complete, so I don't want to continue any further to find out that it really can't be done.

Thanks

Most Pre-Paid numbers are not portable from 1 carrier to another, from my understanding.
Only from Post-paid accounts to Post-Paid accounts when going between different carriers & even then at times, the phone # can be a leased one & can't be ported over. But the last one is rare.

I believe that I've heard of TracFone customers porting in their number from another carrier. And TracFone offers bonus minutes for this. There shouldn't be any reason that you can't port to or from pre- and post-paid.

Not to push TracFone or Net10 (their 10-cent sister) but they offer Cingular post-paid coverage areas in Cingular markets, whereas Cingular pre-paid has a smaller coverage area.

i know i had a T-Mobile postpaid number and i ported it to Boost but when i switched to Sprint i couldnt port my number either because Boost is prepaid or because since Boost is part of Nextel then my number was already considered a Nextel number and it needed to be migrated not ported
