Default TYTN vs Cingular 8525

The HTC TYTN has many names: Cingular 8525, HTC TYTN, Imate JASJAM, Dopod 838, QTEK 9600, and HTC Hermes.....

My question involves buying an unlocked TYTN vs the CIngular 8525. The 8525 was supposed to be released TODAY (10/29/06) as many of you already know.

http://cellphones.engadget.com/2006/...e-and-release/

The unlocked TYTN has been around for about 6 weeks now.

Now I understand that buying an unlocked phone will probably get you more of the full features of the phone that are not crippled by the provider. ONE VERY IMPORTANT DISTINCTION. On the PDF file I uploaded, the 8525 is listed to have Push To Talk (PTT) which is the KILLER APP difference.

Can anyone comment RELIABLY whether buying an unlocked phone with potentially more functionality, will get you this PTT. Do these two different phones have different chipsets or ROM versions?

I can attempt to address this question:

Cingular releases flash rom's that should work without a problem on an already unlocked HTC TyTN, while this may not be available at the very first release, at some point you will be able to "install" the PTT feature. The drawback is that, from what I understand, it requires 3g Networking Speeds to work, while you're in Dallas that is not a problem for you but I want to point that out to others reading this thread.

Another point you may want to look at, the 8525 will have the front facing camera removed as Cingular has no current plans in regards to video calling, if you buy an unlocked/unbranded TyTN it will have that said camera for future useage. While you can always add the PTT application, you can't exactly go back and add a hardware camera.

Hope this helps minutely and I will be watching this thread while I do a little bit more research on the finalized specs of the 8525.

Actually I already came up with something, the phone is marked as PTT Capable, which means they may not be offering the interface yet just that the device is capable of handeling the software and the required speeds first. We shall see what comes of that.

Cingular does have plans regarding video calling. They released a new SIM version this month that is capable of supporting it.

TyTN unlocked will have the front facing camera, the 8525 will not, keep in mind just like the normal wizard the tytn has 2 camera's one front facing and one digital camera.

They're talking about the front facing camera, not the one on the back. Only the unlocked TyTN will have that; the 8500 will not a camera at all and the 8525 will have one camera, the one on the back (2MP).

I recently switched from the Sprint PPC6700 to the Cingular 8525. I am extremely happy with the service and the Phone, except for the USB jack on the phone. My PPC6700 had a Mini-B and the 8525 has some proprietary plug that makes it somewhat inconvenient to sync & charge.

That is just my one little rant!
