Default 3125 Smartphone and free service to be a Panel Member

I signed up with this research media company called immi. They do media research using cell phones.
Here is the deal: I got a Cingular 3125 smartphone and 2 year service plan and $50 a month (to pay for service plan) in return for letting them run a software on the phone that samples audio to see what kind media you watch and listen to to (like nielsens research).
Anyway there is lots of info on the site. They choose member at random for panels but you can also volunteer. If you are in and area where they need panelist you get a free phone.

I thought it was a prettty cool deal and its a great phone.

This seems kinda fishy, will do some research and post what I figure out.

I know, but it's not fishy, these guys are for real. There is no money in it for them so is not an advertisement or anything.

Here is the breakdown

It just a way to get a free phone and service if they choose you to be on one of their panels.

I signed up, I got the phone and I know they need at least 6000 people for their various panels (according to the rep on the phone).

They were using the 2125, but now they are upgradign everyone to the 3125.

I originally heard about this on Slickdeals by the way.
