Cingular Wireless Brings 3G to Ohio

Cingular Wireless' high-speed downlink packet access (HSDPA)/UMTS network is making its debut in Ohio. Columbus residents will be the first in the state to access the high-speed wireless network.

The rollout supports Cingular's BroadbandConnect service, as well as the carrier's Cingular Video on-demand streaming video service.

The carrier's 3G network was initially launched in 2005 in Austin, Dallas and Houston, Texas; Baltimore, Md.; Boston; Chicago; Las Vegas; Phoenix; Portland, Ore.; Salt Lake City; San Diego, San Francisco and San Jose, Calif.; Seattle and Tacoma, Wash.; and Washington D.C. The network now covers 35 million people in 52 different communities, according to Cingular.

Cingular plans to expand its high-speed network to most major markets by the close of 2006.

Rivals Verizon Wireless and Sprint Nextel offer their high-speed wireless services over their respective CDMA 1X EV-DO networks.
