I'm not sure. I will pay more attention today and see. Maybe not, I have been getting a lot of dropped calls on 3G.

The reason why I asked is because I was told by many that it couldn't happen. Although, yesterday it did. I was in my room on a call. In the beginning of the call I was on UMTS, in Seattle, and then 3/4 of the way through, I started hearing that damn buzzing noise in my TV speakers. I looked at my phone and it went from UMTS to the regular GSM/GPRS. I have the ZX-10 and are having some weird issues with it.

What I don't understand is why doesn't Cingular allow the user to choose which network they want to use. All the 3G phones should have some kind of network selection available so users can choose between 3G and the regular 2G if 3G coverage is not all that great.

Well, since you've mentioned it, I got that damn buzzing noise on my BT headset yesterday! That was certainly a first for me.

It's GSM/Frequency related. Here in Seattle, I have only noticed it on the legacy blue network while I didn't notice it on the orange network.

I haven't heard it in a long time as I've noticed it most on the orange network here (850 Mhz). I've tried to keep my old phone on the blue network (1900 mhz) because it has better coverage locally.

Did you hear the handoff, Jay? Was there also a noticeable change in the call quality after the handoff?

Nope, the only way I noticed was I was watching the network indicator. It switched from 3G to GPRS

I didn't notice any sound or difference when handing off from 3G to 2G either. There were two indications that happened; first, the 3G to G icon on my phone and the buzzing sound on my tv speakers from the 2G network in this area.

Ok that's the kind of change I see happen on my E770V when the Vodafone Germany U-SIM is inserted in the phone. Oddly enoughly Vodafone Germany has built out their 3G/UMTS 2100 networks heavily here in Cologne and the phone still prefers 2.5 GSM (probably GSM 900 or a dual GSM 900/1800, it's 1/2 a mile from here) over the UMTS site (at the same exact location but the phone seems to be connecting to a UMTS site farther away). Since the network lists are very detailed for Cologne, I'll be able to determine which site the phone is connecting even after I set the preferred network type to UMTS/WCDMA.

I could also activate the FEM but I'm not quite ready to seem edit the phone since it is a rare Motorola release and not as widespread as the V3x.

I really wish Cingular had a way of telling my SIM card which network (3G or 2G) to prefer first. The 3G network is ok but, not well layed out yet. The 2G network has better coverage.

Are you seeing any signs of a UMTS 850 site yet? It would probably be too early at this stage since Cingular is busy with the UMTS 1900 buildout. Of course, they might also speed things up with UMTS 850 in Seattle since that was one of the first UMTS test markets to be launched by AT&T.

I am not sure if they are doing UMTS 850 yet. Right now, LOL, all I know is that the 3G coverage is seriously lacking unless you in downtown Seattle and we all know the 3G coverage area is a lot supposed to be bigger than that.

The UMTS networks haven't fully matured here in Germany yet either. Most people are not quite ready to transition to the 3G networks yet. The place where you can everyone uses 3G is in Japan since they pioneered the whole concept.

Honestly, I could care less about 3G at this moment. I bought the phone for other reasons, it just happens its a 3G phone. Also, since Seattle was one of the first to have UMTS in the US, by now, the damn coverage holes should've been taken care of already that are inside the UMTS coverage area.

I think the UMTS site I am connecting to is on 850. I am only guessing though as I know the 850 site is farther out and the 1900 site I get full signal from. When I am showing 3G service I barely show any service bars at home. Even when it switches to 1900, the reception leaves much to be desired.

So you surmise that the 1900 site is also a UMTS site or do you think it's a GSM 1900 site?

I'm guessing that the 1900 site is GSM only, although the 1900 site is an old ATT site, and I thought they were implementing 3G when Cingular bought them.
I'm just guessing by the phone's behavior. I don't have engineering enabled on the LG, (I don't know how)

It's one of the features of GSM/UMTS networks. It can certainly handoff to GSM back and forth.
