I don't know about everyone, but I know that on my phone...when I dial my own number to check my v-mail....the screen shows the actual VM number being dialed.

Dial *#61# from your wireless phone. That should reveal your real voicemail access number.

I tried that and my phone just says, "not available." It's a new phone I bought online and put my SIM card in it. I didn't have vmail set up on my old phone at all, but I had the number for my school vmail programmed so I could get my messages at home. The new phone has picked up that number(the school one) as the default number and I can't figure out how to re program the right number...

call 1800 331 0500 from a land line ... have your phone in hand...tell the rep and they will tell you the VM retrieval number for your area...

It appears your line is not programmed for Voicemail. You'll just have to call Customer Service. Try *#62# or *#67# to see if you get something. Here's what they do:

*#61# - Returns the phone number your incoming calls are forwarded to when you don't answer the phone.

*#62# - Returns the phone number your incoming calls are forwarded to when your phone has no service or it is powered off.

*#67# - Returns the phone number your incoming calls are forwarded to when you are already on the phone and press the "Ignore" or "Reject" button.

when you figure out what your local voicemail number is just go to

messages > press menu key > scroll down to voicemail setup > select > choose change to edit your number > press ok

I double checked mine and it is 213-300-1055, which is slightly different than the one Tony E provided, but both work fine for accessing VM in the Los Angeles area.

If you need Vm pilot #'s why not just call customer service? Easiest way to do it with Cingular is dial your own # and press * when your greeting comes on. Might have to enter a password, which by default is your 7 digit phone #. That way VM calls are billed as M2M

Unfortunately, not in all markets — Bay Area, CA bills all VM calls made from the phone regardless of whether you call the retrieval number or your own number.

Same here in L.A.

Also, I noticed when I checked the detailed billing on My Cingular that when I called my own number for VM, it forwards to my VM access number automatically, so I get billed for it no matter how I call VM.

Man, that blows donkey chunks. I have an Employee Rate Plan so I don't get the benefit of having calls billed as m2m. I've just heard customers talk about how they change their pilot # to their own and just retrieve it that way.

Yep, it sucks, but it's the price you pay with the big carriers. Doesn't bother me, though. As long as I have service, I'm fine.
