Thumbs down Z520a Problems and Questions...

Yes, yet another Sony Ericsson Z520a forum...

I purchased mine from Cingular about 2 months ago... And I've noticed in the past 2 weeks, this phone is turning into the biggest P.O.S. I've ever used in my life...

It freezes while you're doing EVERYTHING, playing games, using the web browser, you name it, it'll lock up on me. I can't even turn the thing off 1/2 the time. I just have to take the back cover off, and pop the battery in and out, to be able to 'reset it' so to speak.

The animations freeze also... The menu will look distorted at times. And I'll also get this fuzzy looking line across the top of the screen... Very similar to watching an old VHS tape that needs better tracking...

The ringtones skip, which is HIGHLY annoying... when I've given so much money to Cingular to buy the custom tones... Since I haven't had time to make any of my own.

And when I've been on a call for about an hour my end of the phone will start making a weird clicking noise, and the people I'm speaking to have said on their end it's a loud noise, similar to that of when a land line phone's been left off the hook. Once this happens, I'm basically S.O.L., because even I call the person back (Or they call me back), it will continue to do this every 7-10 minutes, until I give the phone a good few hour break.

At times it will just altogether lose sound... which is great, when you use your phone as your alarm, and you're 2 hours late for work, because your alarm failed to make ANY NOISE.

The wallpaper will just go to a solid color. (Depending on your set theme... Mine is a purple theme, with a wallpaper that looks similar to fireflies dancing around weeds, so when mine jacks up, it just goes to solid purple)

I am FED UP with this phone, and I will never again purchase another Sony Ericsson product, I've been ruined forever. I WANT to go back to Motorola's SO BADLY.

I know they've recalled this phone, and have a way to fix it... but frankly, I'm DONE. I want nothing more to do with it...

Since my contract is not up til December of 2007, I'm wondering what are my options?

I highly doubt Cingular will give a flying and more than likely won't be willing to help me at all...

Is my safest bet just to try to sell the thing (on ebay or wherever) and use the money to just go buy a new phone?

I need suggestions from you guys...

I have a friend at work that really likes his z520. My children have the z500 and have had good luck with it. They want our contract to hurry up and expire so they can upgrade. I believe you have a warranty with S E for a year. Send it back they might be able to fix it or replace it. Good Luck.

I would call Cingular about it, it's under a year old and since it had a recall they will exchange the phone for you with a newer software version.

My dilemma is that I dont want the 'fixed' version. I dont want another SE product EVER again. I want rid of it altogether, and I want to go back to Motorolas...
Im just plain and simple FED UP with thier product.

First of all, welcome back Ashley! Now for my biased opinion: Trade it in and get a Motorola or Nokia if you can.

Then my suggestion is sell it on Ebay, but be honest on the problems with it so you don't get a bad rating, and while your on Ebay pick up a Motorola phone.
You could go with getting a replacement SE from Cingular & selling it as brand new on Ebay to get more money for the phone vs a used 1.

I like that idea. I second the motion. Trade in for warranty exchange, then sell it.

Try telling this to Cingular. Make up some story about having the T68i and it was a POS but you thought you would give SE another try and sure enough you had another bad experience. If you complain enough they should not have a valid reason for not offering you a comparable model from another manufacturer. As long as you don't go in expecting a RAZR (bc they are "cool") or a ROKR I think you should be fine. Just keep trying until you are successful

I'm really thinking I'll just trade it in for a good one. Sell it on Ebay, then use my OWN money to make up the difference, and just buy a Razr, (Probably from Ebay), what do they retail at now? *Without a new contract?*

And I know this sounds kinda sneaky... BUT do they let you use rebates, etc. When you add a 2nd line? Because I thought about adding my boyfriend to my plan... getting a Razr, and then giving him mine, and using the Razr...

A new, unlocked V3 runs about $200 on the 'bay last time I checked.

I can't speak from personal experience, only what I've read and heard, but all the problems you cite are all problems reported with Cingular's Firmware, and not the phone itself. People who have unbranded ones really like them, and people who have exchanged them through Cingular and got the newer firmware seem to be pretty happy.
You'd think that after 4 bad firmware releases on 4 different phone models Cingular would start doing a better job with it.
I personally will never buy any Cingular branded phone until I'm positive they got it right, and so far I'm unimpressed with their progress.

I agree with you 100%, as you know I have the unlocked, unbranded Z520i and it is a great phone. It's reception is fantastic even from the fringe area that we live in. The only 2 things I don't like about it are the location of the camera button and the weak vibrate.

I will take your last statement a little further and say I will never buy any Cingular branded phone, no matter what. Their track record in the last year has been to scary for me to take a chance..

I guess I have been lucky, my V540 has been doing ok so far and once my 6102 arrives I will see if it's going to give me problems or not. I have had unbranded phones that have been ok, and 1 with a software problem but I have been considering going with unbranded/unlocked phones for the future so there are less restrictions on the software. I guess I will see what happens after playing with my new toy for a while.

I agree about unbranded unlocked phones, they may be trouble free as opposed to my Cingular brander 6682. But is it not a little sad that you pay for services from a wireless carrier and you cannot buy their phones because they are junk? I bought the 6682 for $283.00 after tax, to me that is a lot of money as it is for a phone. If I bought direct from Nokia there was a time you had to pay $500.00,because of Valentines day the price was reduced to $399.00.

Ok, sell your z520 and get a Motorola. We'll hear from you again complaining about how the Motorola menu response and the web browser are slow and battery life sucks and how you miss how you could go several days without charging your SE. Bottomline, no phone is perfect.

Cingular recalled the z520 and with the new firmware version is one of the best phones out there. Lightweight, fast, battery life that lasts for days, excellent sound quality. It has many more features and performs better than many expensive phones. You can't get a better phone for what it costs.

Im well aware of the little quirks that Motorolas have. Until I got this SE I always owned Motorolas. And once I rid myself of this phone I'll never own anything but Motorola. But thanks for the attitude, it was greatly appreciated.

Just an update... Cingular sent me a replacement Z520a... The internal screen was scratched all to . So I called them... and complained a bit, and now they're sending me ANOTHER phone... So we'll see how that one turns out...

This is just so frustrating...
