Default July 2006 Coverage map

I noticed that the Push to Talk Coverage Map is more recent than what is on the normal Cingular web page. PTT can't be more, so they must be the same, showed with updates to July 2006

So this map shows native coverage? Or does PTT use GPRS/EDGE and then could therefore be used while roaming as well?

The map shows what it shows. I found it accidentally this morning on the Cingular PTT page. It surely is a combination of native and roaming partners.

And this new map fill in quite a bit for CA and across the country. Pretty good improvement. The all digital Verizon and Cingular maps look pretty identical.

viewfly, thanks to firewalls, I can not see the coverage map you posted. So I went into Cingular and got both maps and put them together. I didn't even know there was a separate PTT map so thanks for pointing this out.

So I am confused if you do not have PTT you get less coverage?

This would be a good time for a cingular employee to step in.

But this has happened before: I just assumed that one segment of cingular (the PTT group) got ahead of another, and posted the new coverage maps first on the web page.

I can only imagine that they are equal in coverage. It probably will straighten itself out soon.

I would agree with you, since the PTT is new, it has the most updated coverage maps.

I think that particular Cingular GSM coverage map has been around for a while. Even now I get more coverage in central WI than the coverage map shows.

There's no reason why you would get more or less coverage. It has nothing to do with PTT. You still need a signal anyway.

The point here is that you can use PTT anywhere you get a GSM signal regardless of the carrier you are roaming on. I don't know why Cingular presents this map as if there was any difference between voice coverage or PTT coverage. Leave that to CDMA!

So I'm guessing that PTT on a GSM network is an application on the phone and works kinda like Instant messenger, but it digitizes your voice and transmits it via the data network?
