Default SIM Chips

Which carriers use SIM chips? I know Sprint does not, and it makes life much more difficult when you want to transfer data from phone to phone.

In the US, Cingular and T-Mobile are the 2 biggest players in the wireless market with SIM cards.

Any GSM carrier around the world uses SIM cards. Most standard SIMs are 32k these days even though 64k SIM cards are now emerging as well. The difference in k means that the SIM card's phonebook can store more contacts directly on the card. Older SIM cards tended to be limited to 100 or so SIM card contacts in the SIM phonebook.

Here is a list of all GSM carriers in the world:

My GSM phones never have allowed more than 256 contacts for storage, 32K or 64K. It seems to be limited by the phone's software or mfgr. This is true both for Moto and Nokia. Is it different with Euro phones?

Only GSM carriers Tmobile and Cingular use SIM cards. Verizon, Sprint/Nextel do not. Perhaps some of the prepaid GSM carriers might?

Actually, the Nextel phones do use a SIM card too, but it is only for the phonebook, and you still have to call to do an ESN switch when you change phones.

Default Re: SIM Chips

Just some small corrections:

- All GSM carriers use SIM cards.

- Some CDMA providers in some countries use SIM cards. NOT in the US. Ridiculously, these are called R-UIM modules instead of SIMs even though they are pratically the same thing.

- Nextel is the only non-GSM carrier that uses SIM cards in the US.

- The difference between the 64K and 32K SIM cards is that it stores more SMS messages. However both store the same number of contacts.

Ah there you go, I knew the 64k SIMs could store something more yet I was sure it was the phonebook.

No doubt especially if you haven't known anything else since getting your first cell phone. I didn't get my own cell in the US rather the first one was a GSM phone here in Germany in 2000.

I remember keying in all of my contacts again when I bought my V60t because in a last ditch effort to fix my StarTac they did a master reset and master clear. Then I keyed everything again when I bought my V551 becasue the data port was F'ed up and they couldn't download my phonebook from my V60t. Now that everything is on a SIM card when I did my "Warranty upgrade" to a newer version of the V551 I just popped my SIM card in and I was 90% restored. I still had to put my ringtones & graphics on the phone again, and I had to re-record all of my voice dial names. At least I didn't have to key in all those numbers again!

Yes, I noticed that my SMS carry with the SIM card. However, I didn't know that this is where the memory resides. Thanks.

That's the drawback to a PocketPC. You have to make sure that the main battery doesn't reach 0%, otherwise the contacts and the programs installed on the phone memory get deleted and the next time you start up the phone, it reinstalls the default apps. But it's ok with me since I can restore my internal contacts from the SIM.

Some non-SIM carriers have a phonebook transfer system they can use to transfer contact info from one handset to another but many of them charge for this service. Personally, I like keying in all the phonebook entries, it gives me a chance to get to know the phone, it's menus, etc. That's just me, though and I'm weird.

Yeah, but doing it a few hundred times is overkill. Besides, when I retired my V60t I wanted to do that, but the data port didn't work on it so they couldn't transfer my stuff.
