Default Is GSM 1900 enough for cingular?

I bought tri -band phone GSM 900/1800/1900 and it doesn't work as good as my previous phone. Is the problem that I don't have 850 MHz?

Possibly, it depends on where you are and what phone it is. Where I am (Arkansas) Cingular uses 850 so if I got a tri-band phone without the 850 the phone wouldn't work here.

In my area the Cingular orange network appears to be mostly 850, and the blue network appears to be mostly 1900. If you had a triband phone here you would only be able to acccess half of the network, and at that the 1900 band is shared with T-Mobile so that's part of the bandwidth that you can't even access. A 1900 triband phone would give very poor service in my opinion.

A while ago there was a post (which of course I can't find) that showed a map of Cingular's 1900 MHz coverage, and a map of their combined 850/1900 MHz coverage. The difference was remarkable.

Depending on where you are and how much you travel, you may lose a great deal of coverage with 1900 MHz only.

They also say that 850 MHz penetrates buildings better, if that matters to you.
