Jay, remapping the PTT button on the Tilt needs a hack (reg edit), mine are all standard options in Start>Settings>Buttons.

The only one that is a hack is enable the side button for two functions & then I can assign the associated functions through the Settings Menu..

hf1khal, I stay on the TODAY screen and don't have to go into Programs, however if that is your "idle" screen then not it is not much different at all.

The one thing that I do know is that it is going to be very hard for me to have to go into contacts to dial a number as opposed to the the WM way.

PS: Let's get back on 3.1 OS before viewfly *yells* at me for trashing his thread.

That bring the whole thing to show that all depends on the device one is using (2 WM dvices and 2 diferent setting types) And yes that is the idle home screen. Since I have more apps all is needed is to swipe to the next screan.

Back to 3.1, I really, really, really wish that Apple implemented the dial a contact right from within the dial key pad screen. I know of an app that is available to do that (just like BB and WM devices) and Apple missed on that one.

P.S. This is what I am talking about:

Another advice to potential 3G S 3.1 upgraders. If one wants to Jailbreak, this is not available right now (this applies to all 3 versions), and if one did not grab 2 files (IBEC & IBSS) prior to 3.1 release one is now out of luck as any type of restore will force a 3.1 upgrade as Apple changed its signing process. if one is to unlock for using other Provider SIMs, the baseband was changed in 3.1 and was optimized and now makes it difficult to unlock (unless they find a hole). So if you care for one of the two, DO NOT UPGRADE and stay away from the upgrade button in Itunes.

Hf1hkal,

What is this app called? Is it only a jailbroken app? I would love to have this as I became used to dialing numbers this way. Not having it has forced me to use the voice command which works well so it hasn't been a huge issue. Still would be nice to be able to do this.

Thanks,

hfikahal, how is using the 'Favorites' or Spotlight (pressing the home key, and then typing in the person's name , really that much more work?

Certainly better than my 6131 Nokia, where I always had to use the contacts, the Spotlight searches the entire phone, beginning with the first letter you enter. i.e. If i t ype Ph (for phil) his contact comes up and then I dial. Or Favorites, if Phil is one of my favorites.

Charylee, I don't see that Apple made a big deal about innovation with 3.1. I didn't watch the Apple event however. But if anything, it probably has more to do with the Genius appls than BT or whatever. No sense whining about Apple...it is selling well because it IS innovative and people like it. It is not selling because it is Apple, it is considered a good product, period. The best thing for Nokia, Palm, Moto to do is make a phone that is a good product AND sells very well, as opposed to saying that their phone can do various features also (sort of). One never wins that argument, one wins by producing a good product!

I didn't expect so much interest for an incremental update posting. But I am amused that the non-iphones that laughed at the iPHone not having MMS (like every other phone has) are silent today, when the iphone 3GS unlike Palm Pre, does shoot video, like 'every other phone'. And palm has been in the phone business much longer than Apple. Just my little dig, nothing personal, for being hit so many times about owning an iPhone.

Scrumhalf, There is much innovation on the iPhone, from the pinch and zoom, to the full browser (better than any BB at the time of launch) etc, etc. And don't forget, that windows has copied the 'windows' in windows from Apple over 20 years ago, from the mouse , icons and UI. And they still do it better than microsoft, in regards to the UI and other features. So if there is not much different at the UI level, it is because Apple was there first, not MS. It is amazing to me, personally, since I have not owned an Apple product for over 10 years, that they came up with a phone that the entire phone giants missed. Apple's creativity and product design still leads the industry in many (but not all) ways over the last 25 years or more.

oh well, I guess that I should start looking at the other phone forums for minor firmware updates, and start picking them apart....Geez, what have we come too. Just pick the phone you like guys, and be happy. I don't really care why you don't like my phone selection.

Yes it does require a jail break. See iSmart Dialer - Rock Your Phone for the app . They have their own PC app to load the purchased software. The app costs $7.99

Other than Favorites. The Spotlight is good but does not really do the function that I would like to see. If you type from the dial screen the letters in a name, one would get the person and the the numbers in the entry as compared in spotlight wher one wuld get the contact and then have to go into the contact and select the number to dial.

viewfly, I have no idea why you are taking this personally. No one said anything about your phone selection. What all of us were discussing (iPhonies & non iPhonies), was the hype that is associated with every little upgrade This thread had some very good discussion including a few tips and cautions from hf1khal.

No, it is not selling only because it is Apple, at the same time brand loyality and recognition do have a lot to do with it. You and I are a prime examples of that, we ordered quad band Nokias from overseas with no US warranty, instead of buying a quad band Motorola from AT&T. Let's face it other than the 16 million color screen the 6131 did not have anything over a V557 other than the Nokia name. Again, I am definitely not saying that the iPhone is not a good product but the fact it is an Apple product does help.

Again I am not supporting the Pre's lack of absence of video mms but in my opinion video mms is not as commmon as mms for most people. Perhaps this is the reason that that people are not as concerned with the lack of video mms as they were with mms and has nothing to do with iPhone or Pre.

I am sorry, you took it to be personal, out of respect for you I will try to refrain from posting on iPhone threads from now on, specially the one's started by you.

No hard feelings, at least none on my part.

I don't think hard feelings are to be taken from the lively discussions we have been having. I am sure that all is in good spirit and no one should take it personally in any manner. Also, I bet all is interested (one way or the other) in letting all know that this is what we all desire in a smart phone and may be the more talk like this (here and on the net) the more attention the device makers will give to our opinions.

Actually, I only reboot about 2-3 times a month. Windows Mobile is very stable when you install it bloatware free.

Of course you have always been able to make free ringtones from any mp3 file since the first iPhone.

Or, buy an iTunes song (millions) and convert it to a snipet for the iPhone ringtone (I think that was the price of the song plus a charge).

For all of those above youwould load to your phone via itunes synching with the usb cable.

The only new thing in 3.1 is directly going to the itunes store from the iphone wirelessly and that apple has already made a ringtone snipet for customers. I think this involved some legal roadblocks to get to there. So for that they are charging $1.29 which I agree is a lot; but I paid $3 from Cingular years ago to do the same.

But if you want it free, just cut a mp3 from any song, load it into itunes and synch away; then chose different ringtones for each contact if you wish.

No need to jailbreak to do this.

Yes, it does seem so close, but not quite what you want. It is interesting though. Using voice commands (either with BT or through the phone's mic directly), one can say 'Call 123 4567' (instead of saying 'Call Viewfly') and it will dial that number, or find and display the contact name (if it is there) while dialing. But if you type in the same number from the keypad, it will not find the associated contact, just dial the number; unless you type the number in the exactly the same way (ie, including the area code), then it will display the contact and then dial.

Sounds like an x.2 update for the future.

I do agree that the other voice control commands such as asking for the name of the current song playing, or asking to play a song, a playlist, or play more songs like this one (genius list) are quite handy.

Just like you said, it is close but not there yet. I have not upgraded to 3.1 and don't think will do to 3.2 until a JB is found for the sim unlock. I am of for a 4+ month trip and I really want to use the iphone while traveling using my international SIM in it. I am keeping a close watch on the Dev team and their progress and once they get a solution I will most likely follow with their recommended update process. I believe that they are close but it might take them a few weeks to get the right solution. The voice dial serves good while driving (So no 3.1 then no Voice dial over BT for me) but the dial screen function would be great or those times that I need to get there quickly while in a meeting to make a quick call where voice dial would not be a welcome thing to use.
