Default Text messaging

My Nephew got an iphone for Christmas, he ported his Verizon number over and all went well except for one hiccup. He can send text messages which go through to the other party but he cannot receive them,he called AT&T and they told him that it was due to the porting process and it could take up to 3 days.
My question is, does that make sense because it really does not to me? Everything else works fine but that feature so maybe you guys could enlighten me. Thanks
One update is he can send and receive from AT&T but he has problems with Verizon cutomers.

usually in the porting process you can make calls within a few minutes, and it takes a few hours for your incoming calls. It is possible that text messages may take longer to be forwarded to the new account.

Its not really a glitch, its just the way it is. The carrier does not own all the servers that the text message travels through on its way to you. The owners of the other systems need time to update their systems so the messages are routed correctly. Sometimes this takes a few days.

Sometimes it takes even longer — when my ex-girlfriend ported her number from AT&T to Cingular back in 2004 it took several weeks for all text messaging to start working correctly (phone-to-phone messages worked within a week, Google SMS took the longest). So just to echo what others are saying Joe — tell your nephew to grab some patience

that makes perfect sense if you know how the routing works...

all carriers are responsible for text messages that originate and terminate within themselves (att to att for example) if the message originates on one carrier and terminates on another (intercarrier messaging) it HAS to go thru a third party (a company called Mobilespring)..the reason for the lag in messaging is the change in routing from one carrier to another... not a thing the carrier (gaining or losing) can do until it completes...and the stock answer is up to 72 hours...
