Default Tethering speeds

I'm looking at getting the HTC PPC6800 from Alltel. I hope to tether it to my laptop and do away with my DSL service.

I have a friend who just got the HTC Touch. It's basically the same phone as I want to get minus the keyboard.

We live in a EVDO area. When he surfs the interent on his phone, it's pretty quick but not as fast as the DSL on my home computer. I have read on here where people are getting very quick speeds with tethering and EVDO. One guy in my area posted 2 meg downloads. This is much quicker than my DSL.

My question is:

Will my laptop run the internet faster when tethered to the phone than the phone runs the internet by it's self?

Will it my laptop have faster internet than it does on DSL?

Unfortunately, I can't hook his phone to my computer to test it, so I'm asking in here. It seems maybe the processor on the phone just isn't that fast.

What are you thoughts on this?

Thanks,

Just general information: EVDO capable connections average 400-700 Kbps with bursts up to 2.1 Mbps. The limiting speed here is how fast the USB system is that allows the data to move to and from the phone from the computer..

Thanks Bryan, but I'm really concerned with why the internet seems slow on the phone and if it will be faster on the laptop.

The phone itself can only process so much, if I take the tilt and run it on my wireless network its not much different then running edge, this is what I have been told and experienced from my data manager. Makes sence though....... I hope

USB is plenty fast enough...way faster than any data connection that Alltel can produce....

USB 1.1 is good up to 12Mbps and USB 2.0 is good up to 480Mbps

SO...to answer the question...your Alltel tethering will work as fast as the Alltel data connection will run..which will more than likely be in the 200-500kbps range. i think the estimate of 400-700 is a bit high because it does depend on if your in an Alltel 850 or 1900 area also i do believe...generally speaking Alltel is mostly 850...some 1900's but i havent heard of as many.

Frequency really doesn't matter. Either USB 1.1 or 2.0 would work for any carriers data speeds. For Alltel data speeds it depends on the location. Average is 400-700 conservatively. Most people with data cards average 1200. Some areas tether can get you around 1900. EVDO has bursts up to 2.4 mb. with rev 0. Alltel will eventually have rev a. and c which increases the speeds. But that doesn't affect someone with a rev 0 phone.

My words of wisdom and random thoughts....Doesn't matter how many people are on a network, you can only use one phone at a time...ok maybe two...

The 6800 has rev 1.1 I believe. I've been playing with my 6700 and tethering and it's been interesting on the speeds. The latency is the biggest issue but I live in an area with both Cable and DSL so I only really use it if I'm in an area where I don't have a connection for my laptop (my friend's house or Starbucks).

I've seen 900kbps down on speedtests and the 6700 isn't as fast at EVDO as the 6800 so you should break 1 meg.

If you need help I can get you pointed in the right direction.
