Unable to complete call while roaming on Upaid

I hope someone can help me. Last week, I purchased two phones from a local Alltel store and signed them both up on the Upaid per minute plan. They work great as long as I am on the Alltel network. Once I leave the local area, the phone show roaming and whenever I try to make a call, I get a message that says "Welcome to Verizon Wireless. You cannot direct dial this call. Please use a credit card or contact an operator".

My assumption was that I could still complete a call while roaming, albiet at a higher rate (59 cents a minute), but I cannot even complete a call. I contacted CS about this and after two hours on the phone, still no resolution. My prl's were out of date, but are both 206 now. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I am getting ready to go on vacation and am not sure whose network I'll end up on.

That's strange...U Prepaid uses much of the Verizon network for their footprint. It should be working, there might be somthing up with your account maybe? Alltelwirelesstech will probably have the answer .

Hi! I had a simular problem.

There was a different message though. "Welcome to Verizon wireless, the tower you are trying to access is not available" This was while I was traveling to St. Louis, MO from Arkansas. I called c.s. after I returned home and said they could not trouble shoot the problem since I was back in my home area.

Last week I travel to Texas and was also roaming on Verizon again, couldn't make calls and called c.s. while there. ( I don't rememer what the message was while I was in Texas )

They told me when making a call to dial the phone number plus area code without the "1" in front first. ( There will then be a message to redial the number) Then dial the phone number again with the 1 in front followed by the # sign. I was then able to make calls without a problem.


I did have the blinking roaming triangle so it was still at the .15 rate. I have not been in an area with a solid triangle (which I was told was the .59 per min rate).

GRRR Verizon needs to fix that message. It is very confusing to our customers who roam and we have seen this since we allowed our customers to roam on them. We have sent many requests to them and its still an issue.

On the first person's issue though, I looked at the registration logs and Verizon is actually denying their ability to call out in that area. I forwarded it up to roaming ops and hope it is resolved. Its one of their SIDS in PA that is denying all alltel prepay customers.
