Greetings, My wife and I just got 2 s46 phones. We hear a lot of air when we use either phone. Is this common to the GSM network (AT&T), the phone, or both? I don't here this on either of my Nokia TDMA phones. Thanks for any help, Greg |

I am trying out AT&T service with the S46 in San Diego, and I hear a lot of air or background noise. I asked customer service and they had no idea what I was talking about.

I have a S46 and have used it in the Northeast and California. This is very little background noise. If you use the headset, then there is no noise at all. My old Nokia 8260 had a lot of white noise on the East Coast. Siemens S46 is MUCH better. Try to see if your phone has a noise everywhere you go, then it may be the phone. Try using the headset, you'll most likely find out that there will be no noise at all. As I read on another thread, AT&T admits that S46 is the BEST phone for the new GSM service. It truly is a great phone. |

A lot depends on the the person you are talking too. I get a lot of white noise when I call a certain number, and thought is was the phone until I was put on hold, and the sound went away immediately. With the headset, I hear a hissing sound just after I stop talking, then it fades away. The microphone circuit in the S46 is HOT at all times. If you have this phone, you most likely were a TDMA user. Most TDMA phones, especially NOKIA models, are hot only for voice and mute when not talking. Also, the Siemens has side tone that most TDMA models do not. That keeps you from talking too loud. Unfortunately if you use the phone in a high noise environment like I do, that noise is played back in your ear while you are talking.

You are right on the TDMA user, I use a Nokia 7160 on Cingular. I did return one of the 2 Siemens I have (my wife has the other) and with the new phone I got, the noise was better. You are also right about the background noise, if there is a lot of it, I can't hear anything. I think I am going to just stick with the TDMA for now and wait for other dual band phones to come out. Thanks for the help, Greg |

About a month ago or so I moved from the Motorla v60 to the Siemens s46. I haven't noticed any background noise issues here in the southeast.

there is lots of background noise with the s46, if you are on a highway, or in the mall over xmas time, forget hearing anyone on the phone

I only get the background noise if I talk too loud or too much wind is blowing. Try lowering the speaker volume - that helps sometimes. I live in Austin, TX and I've used the GSM network with a Nokia 6590 and the background noise seemed quieter on it so I doubt it is the ATTWS GSM network - maybe more of a phone issue. |
