Default Samsung A500 V.S. Sanyo SCP 4900 Definitive Review Please Read!

Samsung A500 V.S. Sanyo SCP 4900 Definitive Review Please Read!

Here is my definitive review of these two cell phones. Before anyone starts bashing my comments or questions my validity. I can honesty say that Iā??ve been a cell phone user for the last ten years. Iā??ve been with pretty much all carriers, but AT&T and have gone through as many as 3 cell phones in the duration of a one-year contract. Iā??ve been on the internet for past two weeks now and have read all the posts regarding these two phones on this forum, other forums, and various reviews. The following conclusions are based on having used both phones and with past experience with Samsung and Sanyo wireless phones. Enjoy the read!

Samsung A500 Highlights:

Awesome display
Small, sexy, compact flip phone.
Good menu scheme
Lightweight
Nice button feel (the click when you depress a button)
Somewhat hard to open phone quickly
Samsung A500 Downsides:

Cheesy toy like ringers
No call screening (the ability to hear a voicemail being left without answering the phone).
Terrible battery life
Mediocre reception
Ringer not loud enough
Cheap plug-in charger can easily fall out when on the car charger

Sanyo SCP 4900 Hightlights:

Loud ringer
Built-in speaker phone
Call screening (the ability to hear a voicemail being left without answering the phone).
Long-lasting battery.
Hands down the best reception of ANY cell phone Iā??ve used, not just with Sprint.
Large color display.
Durable, very well made.

Sanyo SCP 4900 Downside:

Larger than the simple flip-phone.
Color screen is not a TFT display like the Samsung.
Menu is somewhat awkward to use.
Buttons could be better lit.
Earpiece should be louder.
Cool voice memo recording at the touch of a side button.
Available USB data cable to upload your OWN pictures and ringers (approximately $30).

Hereā??s my story on why I bought both phones and which one I kept.

Previously up until about 3 weeks ago I was using a Sanyo SCP-4700 the predecessor to the current Sanyo SCP-4900. I saw the Sprint was advertising these cool color displaying phone with PCS Vision capability, Vision is a totally different subject which Iā??ll cover later. My fathers birthday was coming up so I decided to buy him a cell phone and a plan. He wanted a small cell phone so a flip phone was naturally the choice. I ended up buying the Samsung SCH-A460 which was a big mistake. But, while I was at Circuit City I ended up upgrading my phone to the sexy Samsung A500 being the tech-head that I am. I took both phones home after activation. I soon discovered that the A460 has terrible reception. It couldnā??t even capture a signal in the downstairs family room. The Samsung A500 was in and out of the signal; this was no surprise as to cell phones donā??t work well in our house.
Thatā??s when I jumped on-line and searched frantically to find out how the phones I just bought perform in the real world. I soon discover after some short research that although the A500 is sexy itā??s not the best phone as far as battery-life and reception goes. The first thing you notice is the awesome TFT display, hands down this phone has the best display on the market. It comes at a price of battery consumption. I charged the phone fully on one occasion and left out of town to do some shopping. By the time I returned about 8 hours later the batter was already showing only ¾. even though I had only made a few calls. I left it on standby overnight and went to work the following day. Keep in mind that I had only made about 5 calls the longest one being only 15 minutes. By the end of the workday at 5 p.m. I was driving home and made one call about 10 minutes; by the time I got home the phone was beeping, because the battery was dead. I donā??t know about you but I donā??t have the time to leave the phone on the charger all the time. I know there is a free extended battery if you buy the phone right now, which takes about 4 weeks to arrive, you can call a toll free number or do it on-line. But, I hardly doubt that make a huge difference.
However I can attest that the A500 is very well made, if you want to have the coolest phone on the block this is it! The menu is slick and the text is very legible, one of the biggest gripes I had was there isnā??t a single normal ringer built into the phone and the oneā??s you can download from Sprint are all stupid unless you are a kid. The screen saver is pretty cool but after about a weeks use it seems cheesy and you start to wonder what functions you can disable to make the battery last a little longer. I donā??t like the fact the ringer is built into the earpiece. It great for conversation because itā??s loud, but if you think about it, the flip phone is closed and itā??s literally ringing into itself and the sound is coming directly out like normal phone which can make the ringer seem not as loud. Also I found the body to be a little slippery so I can definitely see dropping this thing sooner or later. The whole case is curved and sexy like a flattened egg, which is easy to hold, but hard to open especially if you have large hands.
The phone is currently priced at $299.00 at retailers, but at Circuit City is currently offering a $100 cash rebate with activation. And Sprint is offering a $50.00 rebate to new customers. So itā??s $299.00 - $150.00 (Rebates) = $149.00 which is still expensive since cell companies virtually give phones away.
But back to the review, after having used the A500 for a week extensively I began to wonder if this is the latest technology, why does this phone signal reception marginal and the battery life terrible. I realize this is a small flip phones, but I remember my Star Tacsā?? getting pretty good reception and great battery life. I donā??t know if I donā??t get it, but should new technology be better? Especially if you paying 3 times as much. Thatā??s when I started to find the reads on people say the A500 is eye candy and that the Sanyo 4900 is the phone to get if you want lots of features, the best reception bar-none, and great battery life. So I headed off to various Sprint stores and retailer to see what the hype was about.
I went to Sprint sales store and asked to see the working Sanyo 4900 demo phone. The first thing I noticed was that it big compared to the A500 since the A500 is a flip phone, but by in large I would say itā??s like the typical brick/bar style nokia series phones, but a little wider. It does feel good in your hand though. It feels substantial and you donā??t feel like you going to break a hinge off when you press it hard to your ear like a flip phone. But I wasnā??t there to check the build I was there to see if the Sanyo 4900 really did receive better?
Even though I wanted to borrow the 4900 to take home for 10 minutes to see if it worked in the family room the people at Sprint wouldnā??t let me. So was forced to test on the spot. I whipped out my shiny new A500 and held it up to the 4900, I looked at the signal bar to see the 4900 pegged full signal; never fading, but always full. I looked at my A500, which was a 2 out 4 shifting back to 4 then 3 then 2 and back again. The whole time the 4900ā??s signal never moved. I then began to wonder if the post that I had read were really true? I visited Best Buy and lastly Circuit City all with same results. I really began to wonder if I had made a good choice on buying the A500???? After two days of deliberation and more use, I realized that the A500 is not all that itā??s cracked up to be. For me that is. The signal reception was marginal and the battery consumption is terrible.
I asked myself the hard question is this phone really worth it and will it do the job??? I came to the conclusion no! Thatā??s when I decided to take both the my Samsung A500 back and also my father Samsung A460 to pickup TWO new Sanyo SCP-4900ā??s at Circuit City where I originally purchased my phones. The first thing when I got to the store the salesman thought I was crazy for bringing back the A500 since it was so HOT and out of stock everywhere. I got mine right of the truck, I had to wait 20 minutes for it to unload, it was only one of two that Circuit City received that week.
I then proceeded to tell the sales man about my findings and he was perplexed and contemplating buying the 4900 also since he had been waiting for the A500 for a while. He whipped out his demo 4900 out of his pocket and looked! Sure enough the signal meter was pegged full without budging. He then proceeded to tell me that his manger said the A500 has awesome reception. So we called his manager ā??Daveā?? who was out. We dialed his manager on speakerphone on the 4900. It rang, but no answer, so we dialed again, this time we were connected but dropped the call because his manager bad signal. The third time we were able to talk. The salesman kept say that his manager used the 4900. He asked his manager what phone he was using and he said The Samsung A500. We looked at each and smiled. We then asked his manager which phones have the best reception. And he replied in a statically sent voice the Sanyoā??s generally have better reception. Dam right I told the salesman. By the time we got off the phone the guy who sold me the two phones came over to see what the fuss was about. We explained and by the end of the conversation he too was thinking of passing up the A500 in favor of the 4900. So I said take these Samsungs back, and give me TWO 4900ā??s man. I got both phones up and going at the store and drove home. All I can say is there was a big grin on my face because almost everywhere I went the signal was pegged full! This was something Iā??m not used to with any phone Iā??ve used. I was very eager to try it in the family room. When I got home I ran down stairs and low and behold I got a clear signal. In a place that I could never make phone calls before. I then ran upstairs into a bedroom where I usually got one bar, no bar or no signal. Again I had a signal almost four constant I was amazed and started to wonder maybe itā??s not Sprint itā??s the manufacturer of the phone????
I left the phone on charger and play with the setting for a couple of hours still in amazement at how well this phone receives. I made about 15 calls that night without a single dropped call anywhere in the house. I soon realized what I had been missing? I putting up with dropped calls for the past two years, not so much because of service, but because of shady phone reception.

Wrap up: Conclusion

By now you probably wonder dam this guy writes long, but I wanted to give my detailed account so all of you who had the same questions could make a good solid decision. I would have to say that unless you are dirt-poor cost should be last determining factor in purchasing a phone. Add the cost up; itā??s the services that cost the most in a given 1-year contract. The $100 or $200 or more spent on a phone is a drop in the bucket. Itā??s like video game counsels, they cost $200 but the games cost $50 to $60 or more. By the time you buy a few games you bought the game counsel over a few times. If you still donā??t agree and youā??re too poor to shell out a few extra bucks for a better phone then you have no business having a cell phone. Because we all say we donā??t have money, but we go out but 4 DVDā??s and a couple of music CDā??s without thinking about it.
It boils down to what you really want? If you want eye candy and want to impress all your friends go with the Samsung A500, but you will be faced with dropped calls and short battery life. I got a chance to use the Vision program over the course of the week. I would say right now Sprint hasnā??t worked out the bugs and itā??s worthless right now unless you want to download Britney Spears ringers or Nā??sync ringer if thatā??s your thing. The awesome color screen saver becomes a novelty after a week. A phone is meant to be talked into not looked at. If you want graphics get a PDA phone or some similar device. But, if you want a solid phone which maybe a little bulkier, but had the best reception around the Sanyo 4900 is definitely it! The 4900 will work it place that your buddyā??s phones wouldnā??t even get a signal. I travel a lot and I need my phone to work when I need it to. Cell service is expensive and when I drop a call it usually accounts for 3 minutes. 1. me calling back, 2. getting a voicemail because the other party is trying to call you back. 3. calling back again to finally reach them.
The Samsung A500 is a good phone not exceptional, I would say it outshines in only appearances. If you could make the A500 with a really long life battery, Kick butt reception, and a louder ringer now you are talking. But, just like computer thereā??s a new model cell phones coming out all the time. My cell phone is my primary phone and sometimes Iā??m in those fringe areas that if I donā??t have good signal my calls get dropped. Only go with the Samsung A500 if the area you live in has great reception all over and you donā??t make that many calls so you donā??t have to charge your phone daily. Both phones work great in well signals areas. But if you get in a shady area. The 4900 will destroy the performance of any cell phone. Ever notice how you battery gets drained when it keep searching for a signal at a department store or office building? You wonā??t get that with the Sanyo 4900J What ever you decide, it ultimately is your money! But, my moneys on the Sanyo SCP-4900! Hope the review helped sorry for the typos and grammar, I never did say I was a writerā?¦.

Default Samsung A500 V.S. Sanyo SCP 4900 Definitive Review Please Read!

Good lord, waaay to much info to read!

I'll just add my 2 cents...

I work at RadioShack and we have a 4900 activated as the store demo, fully functional.

We have has problems with 2 phones. They both do the same thing. The phone will just shut off while surfing the web and re-boot. And sometimes when you get a download the phone will freeze up and you will have to take the battery off to reboot. And when you do download something, it either doesnt show up anywhere on the phone, or it will have a bunch of garbled letters for the name of the file you just downloaded. IE--it should say something like "ringer #5" instead it displays "IE PROD #5_*" something like that. Keep in mind this has happened to 2 phones. We swapped out the first phone thinking there was something wrong with it, and the newer one did the same thing. And dont even get me started on how miserable the vision service is. Only half the time can you actually connect to the web.

And just and FYI, the "call screening feature" doesnt actually allow you to "listen to someone leave you a voicemail" as the caller never connects to your PCS voice mail, rather the phone has a built in answering machine that picks up before your voicemail does, and while its doing this, you are using your airtime, whereas voicemail does not use airtime.

Forgot to add a problem that has only appeared on the 1st phone we used. One day I turned it on and the phone began to ring with a unknown number displayed. I hit talk to answer, but the phone will not answer, no matter what button I push, even when you go to menu, answer, NOTHING. Keeps ringing ringing and ringing. I take the battery off, wait a minute, and it happens again. Does this 3 times. Finally it quit, and I called the phone from a land line, and I was able to normally answer a call. That thing was possesed.

There was a software update for the 4900 that might fix what you describe. Some of the early 4900's released had the old software version.

I did not have any problems activating mine. The only delay was the Vision didn't work for about an hour or so. But I haven't had any problems since.

Well I haven't been able to get to the My Account part of Vision for a day or so now....

Default Samsung A500 V.S. Sanyo SCP 4900 Definitive Review Please Read!

Well, I had purchased the 4900 for my wife about 2 days ago. I was upgrading her to the new phone cause her Samsung sch3500 broke after 2 and a half years of faithful service. Well, I purchased it from Radioshack, went home and called sprint to activate the phone. They did the whole programming the thing manually, and said it would be ready in two hours, just keep it on and the other phone off(my wife's 3500). I did that, waited 2 hours, and could not recieve or send phone calls with it. Called Sprint back, and for close to 2 hours was working with them to get it going (well, 30 minutes working with them, hour and a half on hold) I was told I had to even change my plan (which made it cheaper, so I am happy about that) Made the 3g phone the primary phone, and lastly talked to the tech who told me to wait 2 hours and it would work, she (the tech) even said she would call me when she came back to work the next day to see if it worked (couldn't call me at night due to restrictions calling after 9:30 or something) so I wouldn't have to wait on hold. Well, I am a 8-5 man, so I went to bed happy and hopeful.
Next day, the phone didn't work, the tech didn't call me back like she said she would. I waited another hour or so on hold which the tech told me he did something new, had to talk to the Support Archives (something like that) and wait another 2 hours and it would work in the morning. I went to bed not happy, but hopeful.
This morning, again, the phone doesn't work. I am quite fed-up with the whole thing and will be taking it back to the nice man at Radioshack for a refund.

Anybody have any suggestions?

Thanks

Jeff or uhm, anonymous

Jeff,

If possible I would take the phone back to Radio Shack and go to your nearest Sprint store. I had a friend who got his phone at a Radio Shack and they had a bunch of problems. He took the phone back and went to the Sprint store and he was up and running in less than 30 minutes. I am not saying the problem is with Radio Shack and it could have been a bad setup. I also have the 4900 and it is by far the best phone I have had with Sprint.

Default Samsung A500 V.S. Sanyo SCP 4900 Definitive Review Please Read!

Great Review! It really sums up my experiences with both phones. I have been using the 4900 for 2 days now and it is really heads and sholuders above the A500 regarding performance. I have been able to make calls in places that I never even registered a signal with my a400 or a500. I have to agree that it really came down to performance over looks. And the fact that the 4900 was free and I got $100 back when exchanged my A500.

For those of you who don't know, at least in Indiana anyway, if you up grade to new Vision contract you can get $50-$200 off any phone depending on how long you have been with Sprint and your contract level. I had been with sprint over a year and I had $120 total digital connection package and that maxed out the instant rebate. Now I have the Vision plan with 2500 anytime minutes shared with a free additional line and 2MB vision for $110. So not only did I get a free new phone; I picked up more minutes and it is cheaper monthly, too.

if your phone doesnt work after it was switched out from a previous phone, its a problem with the system or your account settings. Very rarely is it the phone. The most common mistake of all time is inputting the esn incorrectly into sprints systems. you should exchange it instead of returning it. 4900 is a great phone

Hey -- I just have a question about the 4900 for everyone out there who has it:

I have been using the Vision service for a few days, and have noticed that....when I log on, and get the main "Vision Home Page", and I make a selection (such as to go to "News", or "Ringers", etc...) ---- I've noticed that it seems pretty slow.

By slow, I mean -- it will take about 20-30 seconds for the next page to load onto my screen. It has continually seemed sluggish, since I've been playing with this new Vision thing. I had honestly thought that speeds would be significantly faster!! However, in all honestly....I think that the plain old Web Browser on my Qualcomm 2760 was faster than this thing!! If I want to check a score or news or something, it really takes a while with this Vision!!!

Is it my phone? Is it settings? Is Vision just NOT as fast as advertised????

Default Samsung A500 V.S. Sanyo SCP 4900 Definitive Review Please Read!

Thanks for the *very* detailed review =) I've had my 4900 since early August... never had a prb, never dropped a call, never looked back after moving on from a flip to a candybar style. I must admit, I was one of those A500 stalkers hitting the stores on a daily basis to see if they had arrived. After growing weary of waiting I decided to take a look at the 4900. It seemed to me that the only major difference was the sharper screen of the A500 (which I decided I could live without). Now, I had to decide if I could take a step back from flip to candybar. The final comparison was cost, $299 vs. $179. Hmmm... Candybar, how sweet it is! =) And I've had nothing but pleasant surprises since. I never knew that the reception was this awesome! or that the features were this extensive. The store literature doesn't do the phone justice. If you're still stuck on style over performance I'd be more than happy to lend you my 4900 whenever your battery dies or your reception stops receiving ;-) See ya on the fringe!

It does seem slow! In my opinion, it seems as slow as the old wireless web. I am however in Gainesville and I think this might be a congested area. I'll try it again when I return home (USVI) tomorrow evening.

It's not your phone don't worry I owned first the A500 then switched to the 4900. They were both slow as hell. I never used the web when I had my previous samsung/sanyo phones but I do remember seeing my friends browse a lot faster than this Vision crap. IMHO Sprint rolled this Vision thing out too early with out working out the bugs first. I don't really care for it and I think downloading ringers and screensaver is a novelty. I think the high speed access would be the most benficial. As far as I know we can't and Sprint can't even change our vision e-mail address, even though the website accepts the changes; they never actually work. It just says it will propagate in 4 hours, but it never does. I spoke with a Sprint rep. and they said it's a glitch they're aware of and are working on. As long I keep receiving great reception on my 4900 I'm happy. But if you went to Vision for the hype I can see a law suit ensuing and/or a lot of pissed off subscribers.

Default Samsung A500 V.S. Sanyo SCP 4900 Definitive Review Please Read!

Yea, wireless web on the 4900 is a joke. They did a bunch of training at RadioShack on the new Vision stuff, and they said all kinds of stuff on how the new interface is going to make it much more user friendly and less steps were needed to do stuff like send email, check sports, ect ect. Like others have said, the old wireless web is leaps and bounds faster and easier then this new Vision crap. This just makes my job harder. More customer complaints against Sprint, as if there weren't enough to begin with. I originally was going to buy the 4900 THE DAY IT CAME OUT. But I decided to see how it worked first, and to see if the features were worth the extra money, but they are not. Oh well. I'll keep my trusty 4500!

Default Samsung A500 V.S. Sanyo SCP 4900 Definitive Review Please Read!

Just wanted to let everyone know.....I took back the 4900 from Radioshack (after letting the manager try and get it to work. 30 minutes later, nothing) Then I went to the Sprint store, told them to set me up with a 4900 that works, the employee there (who was very professional) said "no problem" set me up with a new phone, new case, activated it, and said it would work in 2 hours, I was very hesitant to buy it, but he assured me it would work. Waited until the next morning...and.... NOTHING!! NADA!! NO WORKING!!!
AUGGHHH, what do I have to do to upgrade my wife's phone??? Do a 3g dance? Well, I am going to spend another evening going to Sprint support, being overly annoyed, yet nice and firm, and sit and wait until they get it working, or just get my money back.

At the very least, I should be getting paid an hourly wage for this much trouble.

Default Samsung A500 V.S. Sanyo SCP 4900 Definitive Review Please Read!

So, I have a Samsung A500.. I DO know what you're talking about with the signal as right now, I'm only have 2 lines in the battery signal it will go to 4 but it hardly stays on that but I do not get dropped calls, I'm in Las Vegas, NV but the battery life sucks.. Haven't got my extended battery yet.. I know Sanyo is good because I sold my Sanyo 5150 for a Samsung A500.. The 5150 had lots of features inlcuding call screening and stuff..

The thing that bothers me is that, I have to go to a Sprint PCS tech support to upgrade my software because my software is: VH03

Everytime I went online with the A500, to check my email and stuff mainly on Yahoo and AOL.. It will tell me to enable my cookies and javasript.. And I get alot of internal browser.. Been getting the run around from Sprint for quite awhile now and Samsung as well, I can't afford to keep calling Sprint for they charge $3.00 per call to their service representative.. Can you tell me if you got them annoying things as well when you went online?? Email me at ieak47ie@yahoo.com Thanks

>>IMHO Sprint rolled this Vision thing out too early with out working out the bugs first. <<

>>As far as I know we can't and Sprint can't even change our vision e-mail address, even though the website accepts the changes; they never actually work. It just says it will propagate in 4 hours, but it never does. I spoke with a Sprint rep. and they said it's a glitch they're aware of and are working on. <<

More than a week ago I tried on two consecutive days to change my vision user name from the
Sprint pcs website for managing my account. Supposedly the user name change was
accepted. The website would not accept my requested change to my vision password.
(More on that later.)

When the changes did not go into effect in 4 hours or overnight, I called Tech Support for
help. After waiting for at least 50 minutes on hold, I then spent about an hour with a Tech
Support rep trying to change the vision user name and vision user password details
from my handset. He walked me through all the programming on my handset, providing
the programming codes as needed at various screens. He told me to leave my phone off
for two hours while the programming was changed by Sprint.

Nada.

I called back six hours later and waited 50 minutes on hold again, then spent another hour with a
second Tech Support rep trying to restore my original vision user name and original vision password. At
least I would be able to get back out to the net when Sprint recognized my original vision user name and password.
(Darn good thing that earlier in the day I had written down my ORIGINAL vision user password which
appeared on my handset, because at NO TIME while originally provisioning my phone did the
Sprint rep actually tell me that I HAD an original vision password assigned by Sprint, OR what it was.
(Note: record the upper and lower case characters correctly when you pull this vision password
off of your phone - CASE COUNTS!) (Oh by the way, the Sprint pcs website neglects to tell you
that the vision password MUST begin with a letter of the alphabet, even if all the remaining
characters in your password are numbers!)

I waited til after work and still I had no web access. I kept getting error message No. 106. So I
called another Tech Support rep (I forget how long I waited on hold this time.) I told this rep how
hard the others had worked with me to try to get my vision user name and password changed and
how it was all not working correctly yet. This time we went into the handset and reprogrammed
my ORIGINAL vision user name because he told me there is a programming problem in trying to
change vision user names and they will not be permitting changes for the next month or so. We
then went in and reprogrammed the NEW vision password to work with the ORIGINAL vision user
name because, it turned out, the vision password change from earlier in the day had been accepted.

The third time was the charm, so to speak - I am not charmed by my original vision user name
and I cannot wait until I can change it. I can now get to the web under my original user name and
with my new vision password.

By the way, the Sprint reps will ask you for your ACCOUNT password in order to assist you by
phone. However, they are NOT permitted to ask for or know your VISION password, so do not
attempt to give the vision password to the reps.

One last thing. One of the Tech Support reps said that the original vision password is a generated
detail that cannot be re-entered by typing it into the handset. While this may be true, just to be safe
I would suggest that if you come to learn what the original vision password is, write it down, exactly
as you see it in upper case letters, lower case letters, and numbers.
