LG VX-1 -- vibrate activated while phone is closed??

I just got the VX-1 yesterday, and I was just wondering if anyone knows how to activate and deactivate manner mode without having to open up the phone. It seems kind of lame to have two manner mode buttons when the phone needs to be open for both of them to work even though one of the them is placed conveniently on the outside of the clamshell.
