I know that dropped calls can be a headache in one sense of the word. However, that's not what I mean this time. I just wanted to ask anyone if they have experience an actual headache when using a cellphone. Sometimes I can be talking for about 5 to 10 minutes and my head begins to hurt. This seems to happen with Nokia TDMA phones. I used to have a Motorola TDMA before and I never got a headache. Has anyone experienced this? If so what phone models caused the pain?

It is probably just because the phone is not very comfortable to use. It is probably small and doesn't cover your ear as well as the others.

I guess to test dobby's theory, try using the hands-free headset with your Nokia and see if you do/don't get a headache. I've never gotten a headache from Nokias. Neckcramps and ear-aches from tilting my head and/or pressing the phone against my ear, yes, but not headaches. (Actually, Nokia has equipped all their phones with subliminal messages at high pitch just out of normal hearing range that says, "You are getting a headache. Stop talking to much.) With the headset I don't get headache at all. However, without the headset I feel an internal headache, and not in the ear area but all over. I also feel some dizzyness after hanging up. Am I becoming sensitive to the signal or what? I am going to put the phone in my ear while its off to test dobby's theory.

bobolito, I actually noticed the same thing happening when I talked on my Nokia 8260 for varied periods of time -- it really didn't matter if it was a 5 minute conversation or a 60 minute one. I found that if I used the earbud the problem went away. I recently "upgraded" to a Motorola V.60 and, despite a higher SAR, I haven't had any problems. I did notice that on the Nokia the battery would "surge" regularly (probably trying to maintain the signal) ... it's possible that either the "surge" or the low-pitch noise associated with it caused my headaches. If you're in the market for a new phone, try a different brand. I was hesitant to move to the Motorola but have been extremely pleased with the change. In fact, I may stick with Motorola for future handsets if they continue coming up with slick, updated designs. ATLguy |

ATLguy, I have noticed there's a very faint hiss noise while the phone is transmitting. I don't know if this is the same noise you are talking about. Is it the V60t TDMA that you have? How is the battery life on it? Is it better than the 8260? Although their sound quality was excellent, one thing I hated about the startac and talkabout models is their poor battery life.

It probably has more to do with the sound quality of the phone and the way you're holding it. There is no where near enough power to affect you. A computer monitor puts out more radiation than an average cell phone.

bobolito, The "faint hiss" that you describe may be the same noise that I experienced ... all I know is that my 8260 made some very strange (albeit faint) noises during use and it just sounded (and even felt) like a battery surge. I was told by Cingular that this is "normal" and that it is from increased power being used to maintain the signal. I'm not sure if there's any truth in that, but the upgrade to the V60 fixed all those problems. My V60 is indeed the TDMA model (V60t). I've had good luck with the battery ... although I've only had it for about 2 weeks now. I would say that it is just about on par with the Nokia 8260 ... probably with the V60 getting an extra 20-30 minutes of talk time per charge. ATLguy |

yep, that sounds to me its the transmitter. When receiving an SMS I would put the phone in my ear and I could hear bursts of data coming in....hehe. Also, if I placed it near a computer speaker, I could hear the interference it made on the speaker. Also, on some computer monitors, when placed very close, it would disturb the monitor picture making it shake. Only CDMA phones don't cause that interference.

Although I don't own a v60, I've used it and sound is very good.

Cell Phone aches are caused by a number or things. 1. Pressing the phone against your ear 2. Heat from cell phone against the thin skin of your ear 3. Bent neck while holding the cell phone Once you get in the habit of using a simple ear bud when making or taking a lengthy call, you will know why the ear bud has become so popular. I keep my ear bud plugged in whenever I am at home or in the car. Buy a ear bud with an answer button and it can really come in handy. |
