Default Sending to an email address with the ST7897

I am looking at the Motorola ST7897 manual p. 119 "Sending Text Messages"

It states in step 2 I should be able to press up/down to select "Send to a Mobile", or "Send as E-mail".

My phone does not give me that option.

When I select "Send New Message", I am only able to enter in a phone number, not an email address. How can I get my phone to give me the option as in step 2?

The phone is activated with Cingular TDMA. Their network supports the following SMS email: phone to phone, computer to phone, and phone to computer.

I subscribe to SMS that supports all 3 types of messaging.

Please advise

Thanks

Hman

I'm just taking a guess here, but it could be that when Cingular installed their software on the phone, they disabled that feature.

A lot of the times the phone manuals have everything that a phone is capable of doing, but certain providers may disable certain features for use on their network.

I don't know for sure that this is the case with your particular phone, but I've seen it happen with other phones.

Try pressing the # key when asked for the mobile number.

Pressing "#" when asked for the phone number did not do anything except display a "#" on the display.

The Cingular tech I talked to said I will need to send the phone to Motorola to get the feature "turned on".

Apparently ATT requested Motorola turn this feature off on phones sent to them. I got my ST7897 from cellpoint.net with no carrier info/lock programmed into the phone but still did not have the email feature.

I will eventually send the phone to Motorola but have not got around to it yet.

These are the instructions that I have:

Handset to Email:

1. Press the Envelope Key towards the lower right corner of the phone.

2. Press either the lower left menu navigation key on the left side of the phone twice or #> key twice.

3. 'Send New Message' should be active choice

4. Press either the center menu navigation key on the left side of the phone or the STO key towards the lower left corner of the phone.

5. 'Send to Mobile' should be the active choice

6. Press either the lower left menu navigation key on the left side of the phone once or #> key once.

7. ‘Send as Email’ should be the active choice.

8. Press either the center menu navigation key of the left side of the phone or the STO key

9. Enter the email address

10.Press either the center menu navigation key on the left side of the phone or the STO key towards the lower left corner of the phone.

11.‘Enter Message’ should be the active choice.

12.Using the keypad, enter the message text (160 maximum).

Important: The user must enter an open and closed parenthesis in the message body in order for the message to be successful. For example: "(test) This is a test message", or "() This is a test message" The parenthesis can be entered by pressing the 1 key multiple times.

13.Press either the center menu navigation key on the left side of the phone or the STO key towards the lower left corner of the phone, thereby selecting OK.

14.Press either the center menu navigation key on the left side of the phone or the STO key towards the lower left corner of the phone, thereby selecting priority normal.

15.Phone should indicate Sending Message...

16.When phone comes up with normal idle alpha tag display mode the message has been sent successfully.

If you're having problems registering, try contacting the Webmaster. He is very quick to reply and very helpful.

S. Cole

Does your ST7897 let you send to an email address?

If so, where did you get yours from and what service provider do you have?

Please advise
