Default 3 Watts for digital, legal or not?

After reading some posts here I got the impression that 3 watts with digital service was illegal. After receiving some documents from Kevin James I still couldn't find anything that supported this claim (I should add Kevin wasn't making the claim he was just assisting with the research). I went to my contact at Cingular and there response was it is cost prohibited not a legality issue.

So, I pose the question for the forum, is this a legal issue or a cost issue? Can you have a 3 watt booster with your digital handset?

The Nokia 6090 is a 900Mhz GSM phone with an 8 watt peak output! Since TDMA and GSM are very similar, one would think you would be able to use up to 3 watts on TDMA. I think the Motorola 3 watt booster/car kits for the StarTac work with digital StarTacs, but probably only in 800Mhz analog mode.

I am not sure about 800Mhz CDMA.

I think by design, 1900Mhz systems do not have provisions for high power transmission.

Hman,

I agree the 3 watt booster will work in the analog mode. As far as the 1900mzh digital is it your contention that 3 watts isn't technologically possible today?

Tom,

I am taking "Wireless Communications" this semester in college. The class covers all the cell/PCS technologies. When I get to that part of the class later in the semester, I will know more about it and will post info here.

Ok thanks. It's funny that they offer wireless communications in college, my how times of changed. I would be surprised if they cover the 3-watt issue in that class but whatever you find out would be great.

aBasically once the Base Station is more then 21mi away the TDMA signalling fails because of the time required to reply.

To allow maximum number of users access, each band is subdivided into 124 carrier frequencies spaced 200KHz apart, using FDMA techniques. By applying TDMA techniques, each of these carrier frequencies is further subdivided into time slots which provide each user with the carrier frequency for approximately 0.577ms. This equates to approx 217 jumps per second, but amongst a very small frequency range so encryption is a must for proper security of calls. In fact it is not exactly that, it is hopping 13 times every 60 ms, which gives 13/0.06 per second. 0.577ms = 13 frames/60 ms /8 time slots

As soon as you get more then 21mi from the base station, the phone cannot respond in time (e.g. in that time slot) so the base station starts handling another call.

If you were to hook up a 3 watt amplifier to your phone, you very well may be too far from the site anyways..

What about clarity as you get further away. From what you wrote the further away you are the better the possibility of conflicting with another time slot. I used my TDMA phone last year on a tank range on fort stewart and used a Suncom tower at least 15 miles away. I had just as much clarity talking on it 15 miles away as I would of had talking right next to the tower.

Sorry forgot about this to partially answer the orginal thread:

Dont know if 3 watt boosters are illegal here in the US but they sure are in Australia. Check this out:

I'm not sure I get the point the anoynmous user was trying to get at. I'm not asking the benefit of 3-watt booster at ranges further than 21 miles, I'm asking if the boosters are considered legal or not. I've used 3 -watt boosters in the past and the reception is much better but I'm assuming your in a normal calling area.
