Has anyone heard any info on a potential release date of this phone for Verizon? This phone looks like it will be pretty small, but be tri-mode, with dual color screens?

the audiovox 8600 will not had dual color screen. it is expected late march(around there). audiovox is also coming out with the 7950 which DOES have dual color screens and a camera. i do not have any idea when that is coming out.

excuse my naivete, but why would anyone need a color screen on the outside of their flip phone?

I personally wouldn't want a dual color screen phone (yet). With the current technology, the dual screen would drain the battery life in no-time flat. Why will people buy them up? It's the latest and greatest! There are those who must have the latest technology, regardless of how poorly they may perform.
